DRIVEN TO BE THE BEST
Cottage Country Operations
Picton Quarry
Miller Paving’s Picton Quarry continues to thrive as a 2-person
operation. Don Hutchinson and Joanna Sarley take care of every
aspect of their business from quoting jobs, through production
of the material to shipping of the product. This is all done while
keeping the property and equipment to the high standards that
Miller is known for. Both take great pride in their work and treat
the business as if it were their own.
Miller’s Pavement Products Group along with numerous external
customers obtained product from the quarry on a number
of municipal and private contracts in 2014. On top of this work, Picton Quarry continued to supply a wide range of products to
various Alternative Energy Projects springing up throughout the county.
Taking Safety to the COR in 2015
The Certificate of Recognition program – known across Canada as “COR” – is ramping up across the
divisions of The Miller Group across Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Manitoba.
After kicking off initial training sessions in the early part of 2014 with the COR champions reviewing some policies and procedures
developed to assist in meeting COR, the Safety Division has spent the second half of the year
re-vamping the health and safety management system to achieve COR.
COR is a health and safety management system (HSMS) – a safety program where the pieces/
elements work together to make improvements in safety. It has already been in place in many of
The Miller Group operations across Atlantic Canada, and many of the companies are already COR
certified. Since the introduction of COR in Ontario in 2011 – it is starting to become the requirement
in construction in Ontario.
SAFETY
CHANGE AHEAD – There will be changes to the Safety program in the coming months as we head along our journey to becoming
COR certified. In early 2015, you will see the kick-off of a program of internal and external audits across the Ontario construction
operations..
Unlike other “safety programs”, COR is audited by a third party (typically the Construction Health & Safety Associations), and
ensures that the system is implemented and effective. The audit includes interviewing workers, supervisors, and management of
their safety knowledge, and reviewing documents to ensure policies and programs are being followed. The safety department has
re-drafted a new Safety Manual that should meet the requirements of COR and is rolling out new policies, procedures and forms
across the various divisions.
COR is helping The Miller Group take safety to a new level in our construction and waste operations. It will help drive continual
improvement in health and safety, manage risk, and reduce the number of injuries – something we can all be proud to participate
in – and another way in which Miller is working to be “Only the Best”.
At a Glance…
• The Miller Group is ramping up our efforts to achieve COR across Ontario
• You can expect to see new Safety policies and procedures in the coming months
• The safety system will be audited by an external company to ensure it is being followed
• Safety is a part of our operations – an important piece of what we do
In late May 2014, a new Director, Health, Safety & Environment started with The Miller Group to assist the companies in driving
toward COR certification. Julian Hogeterp, a Health & Safety and Human Resources Professional and Project Manager, joined the
team in the head office in Markham and is leading the project to transition the safety program into a health and safety management
system across the Miller Group Divisions in Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland.
Mel Smith Trucking - Miller Group employees receive accolades
As the successful bidder on a contract with the Town of Bracebridge, Mel Smith Site Servicing recently constructed a 750 meter
meandering pedestrian walkway alongside a municipal street aligned with many mature trees. The job had its challenges, particularly
in terms of creating the least amount of environmental disturbance, construction staging and mature tree removal in a busy
neighborhood. As the project neared completion, the Director of Public Works for the Town forwarded several emails and a voice
message received by his department commending Miller employees for their politeness, helpfulness in moving through the site,
taking time to explain what they were doing, neatness and excellent workmanship. Those employees were Robert Patterson (foreman),
Ted Graham, Larry Cooney and Howard Brush. Thanks for a great job guys, but then again, “Only The Best”.
