Bridge Crew Continued
Charlton Bridge - The Charlton project consists of removal and replacement of three bridges. The west bridge was completed in
2013 while in 2014 both the central and east bridges were completely demolished and rebuilt. Both structures were built completely
from precast concrete elements and were completed within only a couple of months during the highway closure restrictions.
Roadwork on the Charlton project is now complete and the highway has been reopened to traffic.
White Clay River Bridge - 2014 marks the completion
of the White Clay River Bridge project. Construction
started only in June after water elevations decreased
enough to start with the placement of EPS blocks,
after being forced to shut down the year before due
to high water elevation. After finishing the expanded
polystyrene, the concrete slab and backfill of granular
material was subsequently placed above. Following
the backfill, the approach slabs and one parapet wall
was casted.
Valentine River Bridge - The Valentine River Bridge
site is situated in the township of Stoddart, approximately
22 km west of the west junction of Highway
11 and Highway 583 in Hearst, Ontario. The existing
1956 structure is a two-lane, thirteen-span; timber
bridge with a stressed laminated timber sub-structure
and an asphalt surfaced deck. The structure is
founded on timber crib abutments and the abutments
and piers are supported on timber piles
founded at unknown depths. Miller mobilized to site
June 26th, 2014 and during the early stages of construction,
excavation for the new alignment bedrock
was encountered. The rock was subsequently blasted
and removed as extra work, a protection system
was installed, and we are currently installing H-piles.
It is anticipated that this year the entire sub-structure
and girders will be in place. Completion of the new
bridge alignment will be 2015.
September 2014 was a milestone month. In only one
month’s time the second parapet wall and waterproofing
were placed, roadwork, paving, curbs, signs,
and guiderail were all completed. On September
25th the bridge was opened to traffic. In October, demolition of the existing bridge was completed and the extra DFO groundwork
to create a fish habitat is now underway.
Crushing/Screening Crew
Our crushing campaign for 2014 took place between Petawawa and the Timmins area, mobilizing 20 times throughout. Due
to the layout of the crushing operations being in close vicinity to homes, extra caution needed to be considered to keep noise
levels under control. This meant for the most part only being able to run one shift. To date, over half a million tonnes have been
crushed. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes have been screened in winter sand, concrete and asphalt sand, mobilizing 34 times in
the process.
In the last year of a two-year contract with Lafarge, we were once again at the McIntyre Tailings site in Timmins to recover and
process tailings to a tight specification for use in the paste plant at Kidd Creek Mine. The season started off well but weather
hampered production in the fall. Even with weather issues, we produced over 600,000 tonnes of product for Lafarge. New this year
was a contract through Lafarge to supply screened tailings to the Lakeshore Gold mine site, with tonnes produced. The Lafarge
contract calls for screening to 75mm minus, while Lakesore Gold required 25mm minus.
TALON SEBEQ INC. Montreal
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The under-capitalization of provincial and municipal governments in the area of infrastructure has created a marked decrease
in our regular activities that are related to these
budgets. This gloomy period in the market should
extend to this year, before the restart of infrastructure-related
works.
During this period, we have done construction work
in the corridor of the A-25 project. For instance, we
did the design and installation of a new road sign
by adding panels with a double message regarding
passage fares.(see picture)
A particular attention is paid to the search of new
work opportunities to ensure business development.
A-25
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activities in the corridor of A-25 are ongoing and we’re continuing the work of network monitoring and assistance to its users. As
for maintenance, the activities are more and more numerous and we are gradually entering into the initial phase of rehabilitation.
We carry out the complete inventory of the infrastructure that we will integrate into a database connected to an interactive
geospatial management platform. This tool gives us the up-to-date information on our network at any time and accumulates, in
electronic format, all the operation and maintenance information of our network. Collected data will automatically be entered
from computer tablets and connected to our database for proper management purposes.
The know-how of the Talon Sebeq and A-25 team surely gives us decisive advantages in future network management activities
such as the project of the new Champlain Bridge or any other PPP projects.
