DRIVEN TO BE THE BEST
Ontario Pavement Products Group
Ontario Pavement Products Group grows again in 2014 adding Logistics to the Haulage group forming the New Transportation
& Logistics group headed up by Randy Murphy. Other restructuring puts Recycling & Milling under Mark McArthur, Pulverizing,
Slurry Seal & Tack coats under Matt Headley who’s estimating duties have been replaced with the addition of Mathieu Fowles.
Mathieu is in his first season as estimator, he has done a great job!
The Pavement Products Group was saddened to see the retirement of Jack Wannamaker at the end of 2014. Jack managed our
eastern Ontario Surface Treatment, Pulverizing and Tack Coat operations out of the Smith’s Construction Arnprior office.
The Pavement Products Group works throughout the Province providing services to internal companies, external companies, Municipal
and private sectors . Working closely with the technical group, we are able to develop and trial new products and processes,
this year we stabilized a 1.6 km stretch of clay filled roadway in the north for Miller northern proving that cement stabilization
can be another tool for road agencies.
Providing Innovative, cost effective solutions to our customers is one of the reasons we continue
to be “Only the Best”.
Oshawa Tank Farm Upgrade
August 2014 marked the 2nd anniversary of our newly upgraded Oshawa facility. In the first
year we increased throughput by nearly 40% over the previous year with most of the additional
volume going to the winter market as premium deicing material or as pretreated salt. Currently
we are 30% ahead of last year’s volumes and anticipate a busy winter season. Our tank farm has
been professionally upgraded with state of the art computerized loading and up dated loading
racks provided enhanced safety and efficiency to the terminal.
Liquid Haulage Group
Our Liquid haulage group is comprised of 23 highway tractors and trailers for hauling hot
asphalts, emulsions and chlorides for summer dust suppression and winter direct liquid applications.
This group services our many plants and mobile crews working throughout Ontario. They have been handling the added
volumes demanded of Lavis Contracting
and The Murray Group .
Winter Sand Treatment
Lab trials have shown that winter sand can be “freeze
proofed” with magnesium based products alone eliminating
the need for salt. The liquid additives coat all sand
particles reducing clumping in the stockpile while providing
consistent performance on the road. Treated material
sticks to the snow pack better thereby reducing the need
for frequent reapplications due to loss of material from
traffic and wind. Many Municipalities are beginning to use
these products.
Winter hauls are augmented with the
demand for premium salt as we partner
with Innovative to blend and haul Caliber,
a magnesium based liquid with dye
to treat salt.
Ontario Pavement Products Group
TLG - Transportation Logistics Group
In March 2014 a new group was formed
within the Miller family, although all of the
services in this group previously existed it
seemed only logical that we have them all
under one “umbrella” in order to capitalize
on the many synergies these operations had
to offer each other and the Miller group as a
whole. And so…. the Transportation Logistics
Group was born. Headed up with Randy
Murphy as manager, the group consists of
four different services with a total of 35 full
and part time employees as well as drawing
the services of some 40 – 50 brokers on any
given day.
Our float division is overseen by our dispatch
supervisor Cheryl Smyth; this is a critical operation responsible for moving the majority of Miller equipment around the province.
Servicing all of the Brennan and Miller paving crews, grinding crews and pulverizing crews on a daily basis.
Our Tri-Axle dump truck division consisting of 5 Miller owned trucks and several dozen broker units is under the watchful eye of
our haulage coordinator Reid Atherton. This division is responsible for moving tens of thousands of tons of hot asphalt and aggregates
every month and is heavily relied upon by both the paving and quarry operations to service their customers.
Our magnesium chloride division with its diverse fleet of equipment ranging from a tandem axle straight truck and poly tank to
our frac storage tank on wheels, our 3 and 4 axle tankers for dust suppression application and tanker that is specially equipped
for deicing rail cars! All of this equipment and our storage tank farm at the port of Oshawa are under the care and control of our
marketing and operations supervisor Aaron Legere. This division is responsible for supplying, transporting and applying multiple
milions of litres of Mag for the purpose of treated salt and dust suppression to numerous municipalities and commercial customers.
New state of the art tanker loading racks are being installed at our Oshawa terminal under the supervision of Kevin Arsenault
and will substantially speed up our loading procedures. Electronic billing and customer notification is also part of this upgrade
and will drastically improve our efficiency and customer service.
Our Tanker division
spends 8 months of
the year delivering
hot asphalt cement
as well anionic and
cationic emulsions
to our stationary
plants, portable
plants, road trains
and Miller crews
along with some
outside customers
as well. This division
moves product all over the province every year and clocked over a million km in 2014. This huge fleet with its very fluid dispatch
requirements is overseen by our dispatch supervisor Michael Hill. The first stage of the implementation of ELOBR’s (Electronic On
board Recorders) has started with the installation of live GPS into our Tanker and Float tractors. ELOBR’s as well as electronic DVIR’s
(Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports) will be phased into our fleet over the winter along with new software that is being developed
that will aid in electronic dispatching and invoicing. Electronic HOS (hours of service) will also be phased in over the next 12
months.
As with most Miller operations the paperwork that is generated by a division such as this and the processing of it is no small task.
This is tackled by our haulage coordinator Heather Burns, she is our TLG ambassador and everyone coming in enjoys her friendly
disposition and bright smile.
