Lavis Contracting Co. Ltd - Clinton
2014 proved to be a steady year for Lavis Contracting Co. Limited and its subsidiary
owned company Frank Kling Limited. Lavis Contracting Co. Limited was successful
in securing MTO Contract 2013-3018 which consisted of recycling, 19.0 warm mix
and 12.5FC1 along with ditching, centre line culvert replacements and culvert rehabilitation.
The 12.5 FC1 surface will be completed in the spring of 2015.
The CIR crew had a successful year with recycling being completed in 2015. Thanks
also to Miller Recycling Group in assisting Lavis in completion of this work.
Underground retention pond at Sobeys
Lavis was successful in securing hotmix supply
for MTO, Huron County, Lambton County, Huron
County lower tier municipalities, West Perth and
private work. With the slow start to the season and
unpredictable weather this kept the hotmix crews
and plant hopping to finish off the season.
Lavis reconstruction crew were kept busy doing
underground work through the entire down town
of Brussels, watermain and storm sewer replacement
in Goderich along with underground and site
work for Compass Minerals, Sobey’s, MTO and the
private sector. Crews also assist Owen Sound Highway
Maintenance in various maintenance activities
along with the supply of 11 snowplow trucks for
winter maintenance.
Lavis and Frank Kling aggregate divisions were busy
supplying aggregates for internal hotmix and reconstruction
jobs, winter sand and various concrete
stone and sand customers. Frank Kling has seen an
increase in sales of concrete stone and sand in 2014.
2014 was a busy year for The Murray Group
as part of the first full season under the Miller
umbrella.
The ice storm of December 2013 was the first
challenge for winter maintenance staff. The
heavy ice storm in December and subsequent
snowfall resulted in considerable drifting snow
over the remainder of the winter, which required
all hands on deck to ensure contract requirements
were met. Credit to all our snowplow
drivers and coordinators for a job well done.
The Murray Group was successful on a large
portion of business in Wellington, Bruce, Dufferin
and Grey Counties in 2014.
The Murray Group Limited - Moorefield
The most challenging project in 2014 was the
reconstruction of Grey Road 30 (Bowes Bluff
Road), which runs directly adjacent to the Beaver
Valley Ski Club. As one can imagine any road
construction project directly beside a ski hill can
mean only on thing, “steep grades”. Grey Road 30
runs between Markdale and Grey County Road 13 (Beaver Valley Road) and is a prime tourist and cycling destination particularly in
the fall.
The project involved full depth pulverizing of Grey road 30, installation of culverts, subdrain, concrete curb (on the steepest section),
ditching, and two lifts of asphalt.
Prior to commencing construction a number of meetings were held with construction staff to review drawings and visit the site
to develop a plan that would ensure the safety of all involved while completing the task within the timelines established during
bidding.
One key operating issue was weather. Due to the steep slopes involved, considerable planning took place to ensure that washout
at the hands of heavy rain was minimized. Installation of all culverts, subdrain and curbs were completed with as much existing
asphalt remaining as possible. Once the ditching, underground and curb work were completed pulverizing and grading of the
steepest sections took place to enable a quick turn
over to paving ensuring the granular material was
covered preventing any catastrophic washouts.
Every single employee involved from the beginning
took a keen interest in ensuring the project went
ahead safely and on schedule. David Harrison and
Ken Taylor spearheaded the project management
side. Fred Locking ensured everything was managed
safely while Sandy Vallance and Shane Murray
completed a beautiful paving job to top it all off.
Thanks go out to “all” Murray Group staff for their
hard work and commitment to this project.
We as a group faced many challenges in 2014,
inclement weather, tough projects, and as a group
we overcame each and every challenge, which is
something we should all be proud of.
