Large Scale MTO & Grey County Paving Projects
Keep E.C. King Contracting Moving This Season
Summer tourist traffic required an early completion on sections
of Hwy 21. Paving at the Port Elgin end of the project needed to
be complete before summer started.
With the addition of a new and larger CAT Paver for EC King this
year, at our annual pre-season operations meeting we were able
to gain valuable input from Herb Villneff from Miller Northern
and Murray Ritchie from the Murray Group on the challenges
we would face on the 50,000t plus paving project. We discussed
utilizing such features as joint heaters which was a first for our
paving crew. Ken Fromager and Ben Hatt led the asphalt crew
through these challenges and we were able to call on help from
time to time. Our sister companies Lavis and then the Murray
Group provided much needed support.
Other projects in the Blue Mountain area include the Woodlands subdivision which was started late last season. Work is nearing
completion and will be the last project paved this year. Doug McMahon has been busy overseeing the many projects this year in
the Collingwood area.
Another large project undertaken by E.C. King in the Collingwood
area was the construction of an entrance to the new
CBM quarry on the Grey / Simcoe County Line. Overseen by
Steve Loomis and Doug Mcmahon, the work included rock
excavation, tree clearing, pulverizing and repaving with
Superpave Mix.
In the Owen Sound area E.C. King was successful in obtaining
all the site work and supply of concrete and aggregate
for the Owen Sound Wastewater Treatment Plant. Work
includes excavation and backfill and underground piping.
The project will take two years to complete and has a very
small footprint to work in. Project Manager Randi Belrose has
to work very closely with Steve Loomis who acts as Site Superintendent, to time deliveries, manage earth stockpiles, and maintain
access on this confined space.
Of interest, the general contract was bid by six major General Contractors with the low bid tied to the penny between two Generals.
The decision was made with the flip of a coin to select the successful bidder.
E.C. King once again this year placed over 25,000t of hot mix on various
Grey County roads which also required Pulverizing and Tack Coat
support from Miller Paving. Rocky Major organized the work ahead
of the paving which required large quantities of gravel supplied by
Wayne Schwartz Construction and Sadler Haulage.
A separate project for Grey County was also completed in the fall to
stabilize the slope and replace guiderail on a busy section of Road 19
in the Blue Mountain Area.
