kicked off the World Cup at Twickenham
against Fiji the pressure was on.
England responded to this and duly won
comfortably, even getting a bonus point for
the number of tries scored. The other home
nations too went on to record good victories
in their opening encounters. In fact the only
real turning point of the World Cup over the
opening weekend was South Africa losing in
the final minute to Japan, a team who had
never previously won a World Cup match.
The second weekend was the big one though
for 2 of the Home Nations. In a group which
consisted of England, Wales, Australia, Fiji
and Uruguay and with only 2 teams to qualify
to the Quarter Finals, there was going to be
huge emphasis when the 1st big game took
place.
And so it was, England vs. Wales. The teams
traded penalties but then after England
scored a try through Jonny May, England got
them a 10 point lead. This lead should have
been enough, however a Wales team ravaged
with injuries, even before the tournament
started, who then lost 3 players during the
match, came back and stunned England by
taking the lead with 5 minutes remaining.
England then had a penalty within kicking
distance to take them level on points but
decided to attempt the win, however some
stunning Wales defence pushed the lineout
winner straight off the pitch and with that the
game was lost.
the All Blacks (New Zealand). The defending
champions are looking to be the 1st team to
defend their World Cup successfully. England
came close in 2007, losing to South Africa in
the final however this All Blacks side looks
imperious.
The way they annihilated the French in
the Quarter Final even shocked my Kiwi
housemate. With a touch Semi Final to come
this weekend (as of writing) against South
Africa, they will certainly be tested but I would
still be betting on them if I was to put any
money on a winner.
My prediction is an Australia vs. New Zealand
final. Having snuck past the Scot’s in the
last minute, I still believe that Australia have
enough firepower to beat Argentina in their
Semi Final and New Zealand I think will
overcome a strong South Africa side. The
overall winner being New Zealand.
I would just like to say congratulations to
Lewis Hamilton on winning back to back
Formula 1 World Championships (I am
gambling that he would have scored enough
points by now as he needs only 10 more
than Sebastian Vettel and 3 more than Nico
Rosberg to win his 3rd World Title and
become the most successful British driver in
F1 history).
If he has done so, it is thoroughly deserved as
he has been in a class of his own this season.
England therefore had to beat Australia
however they were humbled by a team who
defensively were stunning. In the 2 matches
where Australia played England and Wales, I
have not seen a defence that good in many
a year.
Australia will certainly be one of the teams
to beat. The other main team to beat will be
