California<br />

Winemaking started in California as a result<br />

of Spanish Conquests moving up from South<br />

America.<br />

Valley just north of San Francisco Bay.<br />

This occurred in the 18th Century<br />

and used the Mission grape for<br />

sacramental purposes in the church.<br />

The first plantings were in San Diego in 1769 and<br />

after that further north in Sonoma County north<br />

of San Francisco in 1805. These were in Missions<br />

set up by the conquerors and thus the title of<br />

the grape. By 1830 a Bordeaux Producer started<br />

planting vines and by 1838 they were in Napa<br />

The Gold Rush in 1848/49 caused a population<br />

explosion and much wealth was created.<br />

Subsequently the Railroad got through to San<br />

Francisco in 1869 which further enhanced the<br />

potential for commercial wine making.<br />

By 1890 the wine was becoming a quality<br />

product and even got to winning medals in<br />

Paris. Production by this time was approaching<br />

25 million gallons of wine. The ruinous bug<br />

Phylloxera struck in the same period creating<br />

similar problems to those in Europe. By the 20th<br />

Century things had improved with European<br />

immigrants arriving bringing their own vines and<br />

expertise to the State.<br />
