FEATURE NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2015 | 2015 ISSUE | ISSUE #37 | #37 BOUNCE FEATURE was like releasing 26 singles in one year, and then when we came to the end of that we were like there’s no way we are ever going to top this, in terms of continuing the single releases. So in the intervening years, it seemed the album format sort of revived and the vinyl became super cool. And people were buying into having physical copies. When we announced we were going to do albums it was like 2007. Album sales were dropping off the edge of a cliff really and people cherry picked their favourite songs on the album. We wanted to do something that reflected that, as we felt the rest of the music industry was burying its head in the sand and we felt we needed to do something pro-active. But I think with the vinyl becoming more stable again, we were kinda back in the idea of doing it again. We’ve always released on vinyl during the A-Z series so they are all available. Q: Actually that was my next question Rick, obviously times have changed since the release of your first album ‘1977’, people now download tracks as opposed to buying full albums from the shops, how has this affected you as a band? Yeah over the years there’s been a huge change, its kinda weird actually, we recently came back from an American tour and there’s a few people getting cassettes signed that they bought back in 95, 96. Q: The years surrounding ‘Free All Angels’ were extremely vibrant. What are your lasting memories of that period? A highlight has to be headlining, I think it was the NME stage back then at Reading Festival, I think it was the year The Strokes were supposed to be up on the main stage and there was a big kick-up at The NME, so we ended up staying in the tent. The tent was like totally rammed, it was like 5 deep outside the tent and it just felt like one of the most special gigs of the year. 33 33
