DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE
Changing the Dialogue of Domestic Violence by Min Grob...
Following the success of the 1st Conference on
Coercive Control which was recently held at The
Apex in Bury St Edmunds and which sought
to raise awareness of controlling and coercive
behaviour, a form of domestic violence which will
soon be made illegal under the Serious Crimes
Act 2015, where do we go from here?
We need to, all of us, start looking at domestic
violence differently. Instead of focussing on
the ‘high risk’ incidences of abuse that result in
physical injury, we need to look at the pattern of
behaviour that makes up coercive control. The
smaller incidences that, of their own, stay under
the radar but, when viewed collectively, form
a very definite pattern of the abuser trying to
undermine, isolate and subjugate.
We need to start looking beyond what is being
presented.
Two scenarios:
Police are called to a domestic incident. The wife
is ‘hysterical’ the husband is calm. Who is the
perpetrator?
A woman goes to her GP soon after birth and
asks for the contraceptive pill. Does she want to
resume sexual relations or is she being subjected
to marital rape?
We need to start challenging this belief that
domestic violence is a private matter. It is not. We
need to start speaking up. More next month....
