In the People the Word Creates<br />

When we consider that the <strong>Scriptures</strong> manifest themselves to be the<br />

word of God by the way they give all glory to God, we are drawn into<br />

a dazzling display of light shining from the innumerable facets of the<br />

diamond we call Scripture. New cultures and new generations and new<br />

individuals see an ever-expanding vista of the glory of God that is really<br />

there in the biblical revelation of God and his ways. Our exploration is<br />

not exhaustive, therefore, but illustrative.<br />

God’s Peculiar Glory<br />

In this book, I am trying to draw out of Scripture some of the connections<br />

between the particularities of God’s self-glorification and the ways these<br />

confirm the <strong>Scriptures</strong> as the word of God. I have argued that the <strong>Scriptures</strong><br />

not only show that their pervasive aim is to give all glory to God (as<br />

the catechism says 1 ), but also to show the astonishing ways they do so.<br />

What has emerged is an essence or a center or a dominant peculiarity<br />

in the way God glorifies himself in Scripture. We have seen this in<br />

the way he glorifies himself in working for those who wait for him<br />

(chapter 13), through fulfilled prophecy (chapter 14), and through<br />

the miracles of Jesus (chapter 15). That dominant particularity is the<br />
