Conclusion 285 We have seen this in the way he glorifies himself in working for those who wait for him (chapter 13), through fulfilled prophecy (chapter 14), through the miracles of Jesus (chapter 15), and through Scriptureshaped lives of radical love (chapter 16). That dominant peculiarity is the revelation of God’s majesty through meekness. This is God’s peculiar glory. It is at the heart of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Along with countless manifestations in Scripture, this is the central brightness of “the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Cor. 4:4). This is what bursts upon the heart and mind of the person in whom God shines with “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Cor. 4:6). This peculiar brightness shines through the whole Bible but comes to its most beautiful radiance in the person and work of Jesus Christ, dying and rising for sinners. An Inborn Template for Glory In one sense, everyone knows the glory of God (Rom. 1:21). It is written in nature (Rom. 1:19–20), written in our hearts (Rom. 1:15), written in the gospel (2 Cor. 4:4), and radiant through Christ (John 1:14) and the Scriptures. I have argued that this innate “knowledge” means that there is, in every human, a built-in template that is shaped for the reception of God’s glory. When God opens our eyes (2 Cor. 4:6) and grants us the knowledge of the truth (2 Tim. 2:25), through the Scriptures (1 Sam. 3:21), we know that we have met ultimate reality. This meeting—this seeing through the window of the word—has held me for almost seven decades. At the beginning, I thought I was holding a view of Scripture. Then I realized I was being held. That is my prayer for you. It is the freest of all captivities. No one considers himself enslaved when he is bound to admit that the sun has risen. Such knowledge is freedom. Blindness enslaves, not sight. I would like to believe that by means of this book, I have been sent with the same mission as the apostle Paul when the risen Christ said to him, “I am sending you to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light” (Acts 26:17–18). When that happens, we enter a life of extraordinary purpose—to “proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Pet. 2:9).

Now we have a lifetime—or what’s left of it—to read the Book and see the countless ways the marvelous light is refracted in the Scriptures.
