5. Old Testament Theophanies<br />
In many cases we come across the name ANGEL OF THE<br />
LORD which means messenger <strong>of</strong> the Lord. Here this messager<br />
appeared to him in flames. A fire that burns but do not consume<br />
in this case.<br />
Ex 3: 2 There the angel <strong>of</strong> the LORD appeared to him in flames<br />
<strong>of</strong> fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was<br />
on fire it did not burn up.<br />
6 Then he said, "I am the God <strong>of</strong> your father, the God <strong>of</strong><br />
Abraham, the God <strong>of</strong> Isaac and the God <strong>of</strong> Jacob." At this,<br />
Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. 7 The<br />
LORD said, "I have indeed seen the misery <strong>of</strong> my people in<br />
Egypt. I have heard them crying out because <strong>of</strong> their slave<br />
drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 9 So I have<br />
come down to…<br />
Evidently it is the Lord God himself who is talking as he identifies<br />
himself to Moses.<br />
GOD OF ISRAEL<br />
However the clearest appearance <strong>of</strong> the God <strong>of</strong> Israel was again<br />
at the time <strong>of</strong> Mosaic Covenant Celebration which culminated in<br />
a dinner. This was witness by 73 elders as described below.<br />
Ex 24: 9-11 Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the<br />
seventy elders <strong>of</strong> Israel went up and saw the God <strong>of</strong> Israel.<br />
