5. Old Testament Theophanies<br />

Ez 40: 3 He took me there, and I saw a man whose appearance<br />

was like bronze; he was standing in the gateway with a linen<br />

cord and a measuring rod in his hand.<br />

Now we meet the Spirit which lifts Ezekiel and takes him to<br />

another place.<br />

5 Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner<br />

court, and the glory <strong>of</strong> the LORD filled the temple.6 While the<br />

man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me<br />

from inside the temple.7 He said: "Son <strong>of</strong> man, this is the place<br />

<strong>of</strong> my throne and the place for the soles <strong>of</strong> my feet. This is where<br />

I will live among the Israelites forever. The house <strong>of</strong> Israel will<br />

never again defile my holy name--neither they nor their kings--by<br />

their prostitution and the lifeless idols <strong>of</strong> their kings at their high<br />

places.<br />

AMOS<br />

Amos 4:10-11, "‘I sent a plague among you after the manner <strong>of</strong><br />

Egypt; I slew your young men by the sword along with your<br />

captured horses, and I made the stench <strong>of</strong> your camp rise up in<br />

your nostrils; yet you have not returned to Me,' declares the<br />

LORD. ‘I overthrew you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah<br />

. . . '"<br />

Jehovah is the one talking and He says, "I overthrew you as God<br />

overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah..."<br />

ISAIAH<br />

Isaiah said:<br />

Isaiah 6:2-7 ‘I saw the Lord seated on a high and l<strong>of</strong>ty throne;<br />

his grandeur filled the sanctuary. Above him stood seraphs,<br />

each one with six wings; two to cover its face, two to cover its<br />

feet and two for flying; and they were shouting these words to<br />

each other. ‘Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh, holy, holy, holy His glory<br />

fills the earth . . . Then one <strong>of</strong> the serphs flew to me, holding in<br />

its hand a live coal which it had taken from the altar with a pair <strong>of</strong><br />

tongs. With this it touched my lips and said `look, this has<br />
