AEROSPACE
& AVIATION
Badlisham said part and parcel of the estimated impact was
due to the ability of leveraging on another key strategic
advantage — infrastructure-ready available land bank of 100
square kilometres surrounding KLIA.
"The government has recently granted Malaysia Airports a
60-year extension on a rolling lease basis for this land bank.
This foresight means KLIA has unrestricted growth potential,
allowing us to expand from a core airport to that of a complete,
synergistic airport and aviation ecosystem that provides best
in-class connectivity, speed and agility."
Badlisham said the three key clusters identified were synergistic
to the larger airport system and will serve to not only benefit
the airport operator but also the aviation supply chain as a
whole, in view of its strong alignment with the national agenda
as well as the strong demand available today and over the
longer term.
KLIA Aeropolis is poised to become the core of Malaysia's
aerospace ecosystem. The existence of the ecosystem makes it
a perfect hub for aerospace and aviation-linked businesses that
offer complete solutions for aerospace manufacturing, original
equipment manufacturing (OEM) and engineering services.
"The aim is to capture a significant pie of the aerospace
offshoring activities by aircraft OEMs and first-tier manufacturers
who are looking to Southeast Asia in order to leverage on its
cost-competitiveness, ready talent pool, available infrastructure,
as well as to be closer to the market. Thirty percent of aircraft
deliveries are to the APAC region. APAC also accounts for
21% of the global MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations)
market demand today and is expected to grow at 4.6% per
annum. Our aim is to capture at least 5% of the global market
share," Badlisham said.
AIR CARGO
& LOGISTICS
Drawing from the experience of top-notched industry experts
and a cohesive air cargo community, KLIA Aeropolis manifests
its Air Cargo & Logistics blueprint into an expanded Free
Commercial Zone of over 50 hectares to accommodate the
long-term growth needs of both first and second tier cargo
industry players.
A 100-hectare dedicated Logistics Park consisting of valueadded
logistics and regional distribution centres serves to spur
economic activities and increase high value trade opportunities.
Badlisham said, "While KLIA's past cargo growth rates had
been in the low single digits, we had recorded high growth
in specific cargo segments, namely 33% in express cargo and
102% in mail cargo volume, since 2010. This is aligned with
the global trend of e-commerce, where the market in Southeast
Asia is expected to grow by five times to USD35 billion by
2018. Intra-Asia is projected to be the fastest growing airfreight
trade lane globally, growing at 6.5% annually up to 2033.
He added that Malaysia Airports was targeting an annual
long-term forecast of 2.5 million to 3 million tonnes by 2050,
from about 726,000 tonnes today.
MICE &
LEISURE
In creating the ultimate airports city, another key value
proposition is also the availability of urban amenities and
diversified services which are appealing to modern lifestyle.
Thus the third development cluster for KLIA Aeropolis is the
provision of MICE & Leisure components. Apart from positioning
KLIA Aeropolis as a destination itself, it will support the strong
economic engine of growth that is the tourism sector.
With iconic projects such as Mitsui Outlet Park (MOP) KLIA
Sepang and Airport Central, this cluster serves an ancillary
yet indispensable function supporting the entire development
of KLIA Aeropolis.
FORGING SMART PARTNERSHIPS
With KLIA at its nexus providing excellent connectivity, KLIA
Aeropolis provides an important link to a thriving regional
market. It will also lay the perfect foundation for a cargo and
aerospace ecosystem which will extend beyond the boundaries
of KLIA Aeropolis.
In the words of a world-renowned air commerce expert, John
D. Kasarda, "Airports have become not just 21st century business
magnets, but also regional economic accelerators, catalysing
and driving business development outward for many miles."
