out when the database is created and should be enabled on an as-needed basis only.<br />

You can elect <strong>to</strong> use the same password for all four accounts. Use a password that<br />

meets the complexity requirements of your organization’s security policy but is fairly easy<br />

<strong>to</strong> remember. After you have finished entering passwords, click Next <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> Step 6: S<strong>to</strong>rage<br />

Options.<br />

Step 6: S<strong>to</strong>rage Options<br />

Figure 6-13 shows the screen for Step 6: S<strong>to</strong>rage Options. Here you select a s<strong>to</strong>rage method<br />

for database files. Most databases use traditional file systems for file s<strong>to</strong>rage. Au<strong>to</strong>matic<br />

S<strong>to</strong>rage Management (ASM) is an advanced <strong>Oracle</strong> technology for disk management—it<br />

replaces traditional volume managers and is most useful in high-end systems with hundreds<br />

or thousands of disks. More information on ASM can be found in the references<br />

listed at the end of this chapter. It is also possible <strong>to</strong> use raw devices <strong>to</strong> gain a performance<br />

advantage; this was a popular strategy at one time but is no longer in favor because it<br />

introduces complexity and increases the chances that database administra<strong>to</strong>rs will make<br />

mistakes with catastrophic consequences.
