CHAPTER 6 DATABASE CREATION
Post-Creation Tasks
You should consider performing the following tasks every time you’ve created a new
database:
management packs that you have not licensed.
You can do this from the Management Pack Access screen in Enterprise Manager,
accessible via the Setup screen. You need to set the
initialization parameter to in order to disable access to Diagnostics Pack and
Tuning Pack; you can do this from the Initialization Parameters screen, accessible
via the Server screen.

should consider installing Statspack, which is a free tool for performance analysis.
Installation is quick and painless; simply run the and
scripts found in the directory. Information on installing
and using Statspack can be found in in the same directory. We will discuss
the use of Statspack in Chapter 16.
, which is provided by Oracle Support
to collect all the information about a database and its host system that might
aid in the diagnosis of a problem. Oracle Support typically asks that you use this
tool and send the collected data to Oracle whenever you request help in solving a
problem. Although it was created to aid in diagnosing problems, it is of great help
in exploring and documenting database configurations. Complete instructions for
installing RDA can be found in Metalink note 314422.1: Remote Diagnostic Agent
(RDA) 4—Getting Started. Metalink is the Oracle knowledge base and, you will
need a valid Oracle support contract in order to gain access to it.
Other Methods of Database Creation
DBCA is a user-friendly tool for creating a database, but behind the scenes, it uses operating-system
commands and SQL*Plus commands to do its work. You can use those same
commands to create a database manually. The centerpiece is the command,
which is rich in options. In Listing 6-2, we create a functional database with a few
simple commands and then destroy it, all in the space of a few minutes; the utility
is used to create and drop the corresponding Windows service. Complete instructions for
creating a database with the command can be found in Oracle Database
11g Administrator’s Guide.
