Tip List the contents of the view and look for the row containing the words —
this gives you the location of the alert log. The name of the alert log will be , where is
the name of your database instance.
Fortunately, there is no need to stay glued to a computer the whole day, reviewing
the alert log. When properly configured, both flavors of Enterprise Manager—Database
Control and Grid Control—monitor the database and send e-mail messages whenever
problems are detected.
Step-by-step instructions for configuring the monitoring capability can be found in
Oracle Database 11g 2 Day DBA—the setup screens can be accessed using the Metrics
and Policy Settings and All Metrics links in the Related Links section at the bottom of the
Home page and the Setup and Preferences links at the top- right corner of the Home page.
Tip Minimal monitoring is automatically configured by Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) if the
option is accepted when the database is created.
E-mail alerts can be sent to as many people as necessary. Different database administrators
can elect to receive different subsets of the alerts. It is also possible to create
notification schedules for cases when responsibilities rotate among the members of
a team. E-mail alerts can be generated in two flavors—a long format and a short format.
The short format is suitable for sending alerts about critical problems to pagers and cell
phones. Listing 10-2 shows an example of the long format, and Listing 10-3 shows an
example of the short format.
