The Gatehouse is a two year transitional
programme which has been set up to enable
students with a diagnosis of Asperger’s
Syndrome or High-Functioning Autism
to prepare and acquire the skills and
qualifications needed to access mainstream
courses. There is flexibility within the
programme for students to attend the
Gatehouse and also access mainstream
courses in their second year. Learners in
the second year can have a split timetable if
they want to retake GCSEs, with Gatehouse
tutors liaising with mainstream lecturers
so that ongoing consistent support is
offered. Learners will be able to develop a
range of skills necessary for their personal
development and to succeed in the next
stage of their career.
The course contains sessions that aim to
develop students’ study and academic
skills, independence skills, vocational skills,
executive skills, communication and social
skills, and employability skills.

COMMUNICATION

This programme is aimed at individuals
who have Profound & Multiple
Learning Difficulties. It aims to develop
communication skills that will build
confidence and participation in social and
community settings.
The programme enables individuals to
access a range of specialist resources that
develop and stimulate communication,
develop motor skills and support working
with others. All learners are supported to
achieve short-term targets, which are based
on long-term aspirations to integrate more
into the community.

INDEPENDENCE
AGE: 16+ TYPE: FT DURATION: 1 YEAR

This programme follows on from PMLD
Developing Communication; it is aimed
at individuals with Profound & Multiple
Learning Difficulties and focuses on
supporting learners to develop aspects of
independence. This is facilitated in learning
environments that are safe and welcoming,
well-resourced and that enable students to
explore new skills that will support greater
independence. Learners will participate in
healthy exercise, arts and crafts, music,
visiting the community and participate in a
number of enterprise projects in college.
This programme prepares learners for
the next step on their journey towards
independence and will recognise long-term
aspirations in short-term targets set and
reviewed throughout the year.
