Summary
A single pixel may represent either noise or essential detail. Determining which one of
these two categories it belongs to is the primary task of noise-reduction algorithms. If
it represents noise, they switch it to another value. If it represents important detail, such
as the edge of an object, they leave it well alone. Most modern noise reduction software
has very advanced algorithms with the intelligence to preserve detail. Noise Ninja is the
benchmark, but some photographers prefer Noiseware for its learning capabilities, or
PureImage NR for its wavelet technology.
