• no tackling, emphasis on interception.<br />

Practise striking and blocking or stopping<br />

skills.<br />

Practise tackling skills (e.g. frontal tackle).<br />

Play a 5 v. 5 game of hockey or hurling (as<br />

in lesson 3), allow tackling where a group is<br />

experienced.<br />

Children discuss<br />

• moving into space when attacking<br />

Lesson 5<br />

Moving into space and receiving (5)<br />

Practise tackling skills (e.g. frontal tackle,<br />

tackle from behind).<br />

Play a 5 v. 5 game of hockey or hurling (as<br />

in lesson 3), allow tackling where group is<br />

experienced.<br />

• moving into space for hit out/puck out.<br />

Lesson 6<br />

Moving into space and receiving (6)<br />

Practise tackling skills (e.g. frontal tackle,<br />

tackle from behind).<br />

Play a 5 v. 5 game of hockey or hurling (as<br />

in lesson 3), allow tackling where group is<br />

experienced.<br />

Children discuss<br />

• moving into space for sideline strike.<br />

Assessment<br />

Among the techniques which may be used<br />

are:<br />

• teacher observation: child’s ability to use<br />

space and apply skills in games situation,<br />

interaction with others (teamwork),<br />

understanding of tactics<br />

• teacher-designed task: group work: create<br />

a passing game with a target<br />

Integrate with Gaeilge: when playing<br />

games, vocabulary such as ‘anseo’, ‘cúl’, ‘beir<br />

ar an liathróid’, ‘ná déan é sin’ etc. could be<br />

developed<br />

Follow-up work: this unit could be<br />

developed by using court games, e.g.<br />

tennis, badminton.<br />

• curriculum profile: use teacher observation<br />

to complete curriculum profile.<br />
