PRIMARY, SECONDARY, POST-16 & SEN OFFERS Kinetika Project Name About the Project The Carnival Project Kinetika is an internationally renowned company with an 18-year track record of combining world-class design with community projects, to produce spectacular outdoor events that engage diverse audiences. Kinetika has a long-track record in creating carnival all over the world, winning awards at Notting Hill Carnival, producing costumes for Atlanta Olympics, designing opening and closing ceremonies for FIFA and London 2012. Founded by artist Ali Pretty in 1997 and inspired by her training in carnival arts in Trinidad and India, Kinetika now has an unrivalled reputation for working with local communities on projects that change the way people feel about where they live. For the last four years Kinetika has been working with Thurrock schools to develop skills in drawing, silk painting, writing and storytelling. Along the way capturing many wonderful anecdotes about what it is like to live here, Thurrock’s striking heritage, the connection to the wider world through its proximity to the river Thames, and the rich diversity of its population. In 2019 Thurrock is 21 and our offer is to work with you through the art-form of carnival to celebrate Thurrock’s big birthday. Kinetika will bring together a team of experienced carnival artists to create an introduction to carnival for schools. Our artistic team includes award winning carnival designers, Ali Pretty and Ray Mahabir, internationally acclaimed choreographer Jeanefer Jean- Charles and the Kinetika Bloco performance group. Two event days will form the focus of this offer: 1. Introduction to Carnival A sharing day this July 2018, for teachers and students. This is an introductory opportunity to find out the potential that carnival has in bringing whole schools together in cross–curricular activity, leading to a collective celebration. Activities include: • An introduction to Kinetika’s carnival projects • An opportunity to think about any themes you might like to work on in creating your own school carnival • A short making workshop led by designers Ali Pretty and Ray Mahabir, and artist Lisa Meehan 33
