9 Q. And when did you leave that position?<br />
10 A. I left that position on March 27, 1980.<br />
11 Q. Why did you leave that position?<br />
12 A. Because I suffered from an attempt, attempt against my<br />
13 life at my own home.<br />
14 Q. What case were you investigating -- excuse me.<br />
15 What were you working on at the time of that attempt?<br />
16 A. It had been three or four days since the murder or the<br />
17 assassination of Monseñor Arnulfo <strong>Romero</strong>, and I had been<br />
18 dedicating my work to that case.<br />
19 Q. After the attempt on March 27th, what did you do in<br />
20 response to that attempt?<br />
21 A. I left the country and I was out of the country for almost<br />
22 ten years.<br />
23 Q. I would like to talk about your role as a judge at that<br />
24 time. You said you were investigating a case. In a normal<br />
<strong>25</strong> criminal investigation at that time, who were the key people<br />

1 involved in that investigation?<br />
2 A. At that time, the jurisdiction for a violent murder was<br />
3 for a judge in charge of criminal cases.<br />
4 Q. Were the police involved in investigating?<br />
5 A. Yes. The police in that chain would be the first to be in<br />
6 charge of the investigation.<br />
7 Q. In 1980, were there prosecuting attorneys involved in<br />
8 investigating?<br />
9 A. We call them -- well, prosecutors. But at that time, they<br />
10 did not have the size of role in the investigation.<br />
11 Q. Just to make clear, you stated before that one of the<br />
