12 It is the country, in the years that we are looking<br />
13 at, where more journalists died than in the entire war in Viet<br />
14 Nam. More foreign journalists died in El Salvador in the '80<br />
15 to '83 period, than journalists who died in the entire war in<br />
16 Viet Nam.<br />
17 It is a place where information is extremely<br />
18 difficult to gather and, therefore, there is a very high<br />
19 premium on that information.<br />
20 Q. If I could draw your attention to page 16 of your CV,<br />
21 there are listed there some positions. Let me start with one<br />
22 near the bottom. The Latin American Policy Group for U.S.<br />
23 Representative Michael Barnes, Chairman of the House Committee<br />
24 on Inter-American Affairs, 1983 to 1985.<br />

1 A. Excuse me, could I add one thing to my last answer?<br />
2 Q. Sure.<br />
3 A. When things are dangerous in El Salvador, you almost<br />
4 always get a warning of some sort. And there are gaps in my<br />
5 travels to El Salvador, and that is because it was my personal<br />
6 judgment, based on my room being searched or being followed,<br />
7 or something that made me think it was too dangerous, to leave<br />
8 the country and get out.<br />
9 And so as a foreigner, you have a great deal more<br />
10 protection in that country than a Salvadoran would. But it is<br />
11 extremely dangerous. And I think that all of us, the very few<br />
