4 that you believe that he still has security concerns?<br />
5 A. That's right.<br />
6 Q. Any other interviews that are of note?<br />
7 THE COURT: Well, let me ask this. When you say<br />
8 security concerns, what is the origin of the concern? In<br />
9 other words, the subject?<br />
10 THE WITNESS: Why is he worried?<br />
11 THE COURT: Yes.<br />
12 THE WITNESS: If you review -- we haven't talked<br />
13 about the declassified documents yet, but if you review U.S.<br />
14 declassified documents over this period of time and you also<br />
15 listen to the -- if you also do the kind of interviewing I<br />
16 have done, there is, particularly among military or former<br />
17 military officers of the Right, there is a tremendous amount<br />
18 of animus towards Colonel Majano.<br />
19 They believe that he started a process in which the<br />
20 military would no longer rule the country. The military was<br />
21 the government. It was a military authoritarian government,<br />
22 and the military had ruled El Salvador in all of its modern<br />
23 history, really, but very openly since there was a modern<br />
24 military of 1932 on. It had been "the" government.<br />
