1 Q. You began as an Assistant Professor at Harvard University,<br />
2 and then became an Associate Professor at Stanford University,<br />
3 and then were elevated to a Full Professor at Stanford<br />
4 University, and finally, you were elevated to the Gildred<br />
5 Professor of Latin American Studies, an endowed chair at<br />
6 Stanford University?<br />
7 A. That's right. There is a position I have also held at<br />
8 Stanford, which is that I was the Director of Latin American<br />
9 Studies at Stanford for 12 years.<br />
10 Q. In all of these positions that you have held in academia,<br />
11 has there been a concentration on Latin American Studies?<br />
12 A. Absolutely. It's my main area of expertise.<br />
13 Q. In addition to your positions, you have conducted -- let<br />
14 me turn to page 2, and under the heading of Research<br />
15 Experience, you mention a number of dates and areas of the<br />
16 world.<br />
17 Is this field research that you have conducted?<br />
18 A. This is field research I have conducted, that's right.<br />
19 Q. Because of its relevance to this case, I will overlook --<br />
20 we won't go into your field experience in other areas.<br />
21 Could you please summarize for us the field research<br />
22 that you have conducted in El Salvador, in particular, but you<br />
23 have it here in Central America, listing 1981 through 2001?<br />
24 A. 1981 through 2001 -- every one of those trips includes El<br />
<strong>25</strong> Salvador, by the way, but I just put Central America, because<br />
