SPRING STREET SWEEPING PROGRAM
Spring street sweeping improves water quality and the environment
by removing pollutants that can be transferred to downstream
water bodies through urban run-off. The street sweeping program
also improves the cleanliness and aesthetics of City streets and
parking lots.
Sweeping usually starts in mid-April and takes approximately
10 weeks to complete. Arterial roads will be swept first followed
by residential streets. The schedule adheres to the City’s Source
Water Protection plan, which requires optimization of the use
and management of road salt, and implementation of practices
to minimize the loss of salt to the environment. Crews therefore
prioritize street sweeping in our vulnerable areas by sweeping the
roadways near the lake, the City’s drinking water protection areas,
then moving outward. Sand that is swept from roads is disposed of
in an environmentally responsible manner at the landfill site where
it is used for covering waste.
ALPHABETICAL LISTING OF SERVICES
TAX PAYMENTS – PRE-AUTHORIZED
PAYMENTS
There are 3 pre-authorized payment (PAP) plans offered to all City
of Barrie taxpayers:
1 MONTHLY (for properties NOT in arrears)
The interim bill (issued in January, and based on 50% of
the previous years annualized taxes) is divided into 5 equal
installments from January to May. The final bill (issued in May/
June) is divided into 5 equal installments from June to October
– no interim tax bill will be issued; the final tax bill will indicate
the amount of installments from June to October. Installments
are withdrawn from your bank account on the last business day
of each month.
2 DUE DATES (for properties NOT in arrears)
Withdrawals will be made on the due dates indicated on the
interim and final tax bills.
The sweeping program consists of a 3 to 4 part process as follows:
1 Flushing streets with water to move sand to the curb.
2 A mechanical sweeper capable of picking up heavy sand
deposits and debris makes a pass of the street.
(this could be a few days later)
3 A second pass of the street with a vacuum sweeper to remove
any fine material that may remain.
4 A final flush of the street with water to remove any remaining
materials from the road.
To help us provide the best service possible, please do not push sand
into piles on the road as the sweeper cannot pick them up. When
possible, please minimize residential street parking during this
process to ensure best results.
If this should happen, City staff
will note such obstructions
and will return at a later time.

year’s spring street sweeping
