& LANDFILL INFORMATION

GARBAGE COLLECTION

Barrie households receive two-bag or two-can garbage pick up every

other week; organics and recycling are picked up weekly. Consult

your Waste Reduction Calendar for your collection schedule, visit

barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection or call (705) 739-4219. Please ensure

materials are placed curbside by 7 a.m. on your collection day.

Additional bags/cans that exceed the bags/cans limit must have a

City of Barrie garbage tag affixed either around the neck of the bag

or on the garbage in the can, not on the can itself. Garbage tags are

available at a number of retail locations throughout the City. Loose

items and items that do not fit in a standard size garbage can will

not be collected.

Garbage cans must have open handles and be designed to be

manually lifted. Bags/cans must not exceed 20kg (45lb) and 125 litre

capacity. For safety reasons, please wrap sharp objects (ie: glass or

nails) in protective material such as newsprint and label garbage

that contains safety hazards.

Garbage cans must have a removable lid. Do not attach lid with a

rope/bungee cord.

Syringes and needles must be disposed of at the Household

Hazardous Waste Facility. For additional disposal options, visit

www.healthsteward.ca.

YARD WASTE COLLECTION

The City of Barrie provides a curbside Yard Waste Collection Program

on the same day as garbage, organics, and recyclables. (Consult

the Community Information and Waste Reduction Calendar or

visit barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection for your collection schedule).

Yard waste is collected every week during the months of January,

April, May, June, September, October and November.

Yard waste is collected every other week during July, August and

December on the opposite week that your garbage is collected.

There is NO yard waste collection (including Christmas Trees) during

the months of February and March.

Yard waste is acceptable for collection in paper bags, cardboard

boxes (leave boxes open) and garbage cans (lids off). Leaf and

yard waste placed in plastic bags, organic bins or recycling boxes

will not be collected. Clippings from trees and shrubs must be tied

into bundles no longer than 1.8m (6ft) in length and 30cm (1ft) in

diameter. Branches must not exceed 100mm (4”) in diameter. Trees

must not exceed 1.8m or (6ft) in length.

Yard waste containers must NOT exceed 20kgs (45lb). Sod and dirt

are not acceptable. Residents are reminded not to place any glass,

plastic or metal items in their yard waste (i.e. plastic flower pots,

plastic soil or pet bags). Plastic contaminates the yard waste and

prevents it from becoming high quality compost. Materials must be

placed curbside by 7 a.m. on your collection day. If it doesn’t grow

– it doesn’t go!

There is no garbage, organics, leaf and yard waste and /or recyclables

collection on statutory holidays. When this occurs, collection will be

one day later for the remainder of the week. Collection does occur

on Remembrance Day, Boxing Day, and Easter Monday.
