28 2. Review consumption, costs and production of energy You can’t manage what you don’t measure! A systematic review and analysis of energy consumption forms the basis for an increase in energy efficiency. The higher the consumption the more detailed the measurement should be and, consequently, the easier it is to ascertain the savings potential. These measurements are restricted by measurement costs, which should naturally not exceed the benefits. If you have localised big consumers, you can tighten the system boundaries of the analysis in order to obtain detailed information. In addition to consumption data, there are other relevant factors which should be included in order for a comprehensive assessment of data to be possible. In order to maintain clarity, it makes sense to take into account the entire company, as well as individual areas. However, system boundaries and operational conditions should always be determined in this case.
