The comeback
Il ritorno

W
e are writing this editorial after
Easter and we are told that we will
soon be back to normal. We hope
that this will be the case when Elevatori
Magazine is distributed to readers
at the beginning of the summer. Being Easter,
Christians hope for a Resurrection.
We wonder what this new normality
will be after more than a year of abnormality
and, in some cases, feelings close to despair
and disillusionment.
Will everything be as it was before?
And will it be for all of us?
A few habits from this last year will probably
remain and perhaps be perfected.
We are referring to working remotely
(smart working) when possible, which will help
reduce waste (less travel, less use of cars,
more time spent at the PC and other media,
perhaps more school attendance, which will
no longer be limited by travelling time
and adverse physical situations).
Will everything be the same as before,
in the sense that we will forget the fears and
anxieties we have suffered for so many months?
In spite of all possible optimism, I fear that fears
will remain because the experience has been
so traumatic, as it affected so many families,
that we will project ourselves into a future
that is no longer totally programmable
(as we perhaps thought it could be),
but subject to the whims of a malicious virus
and other possible events. Some fear will remain.
I have a memory of the post-war period,
when my mother kept the household food stocks
high for fear of returning to wartime,
when there was a shortage of almost everything,
if not everything, and we were at the mercy
of what was called the ‘black market’.
Are the fears about what might happen
in the near future justified? And will they occur?
Scriviamo questo editoriale nel periodo
successivo alla Pasqua e ci dicono
che presto torneremo alla normalità.
Speriamo che possa essere così anche quando,
all’inizio dell’estate, Elevatori Magazine
sarà stata distribuita ai lettori. Essendo Pasqua
i credenti sperano in una Resurrezione.
Ci domandiamo che cosa sarà questa nuova
normalità dopo oltre un anno di anormalità
e di sentimenti, in certi casi, vicini a disperazione
e disillusione.
Sarà tutto come prima? E lo sarà per tutti noi?
Qualche abitudine di questo ultimo anno
probabilmente rimarrà e forse sarà perfezionata.
Ci riferiamo al lavoro a distanza (smart)
quando possibile, che aiuterà a ridurre sprechi
contro la tutela dell’ambiente (meno viaggi,
minore impiego di automobili, maggiore
familiarità con il PC e gli altri mezzi
di trasmissione, forse maggiore frequenza
scolastica, che non sarà più limitata dai tempi
di trasporto e da situazioni fisiche avverse).
Sarà tutto come prima, nel senso
che dimenticheremo paure e ansie sofferte
per così tanti mesi?
Malgrado tutto l’ottimismo possibile, temo che
le paure rimarranno perché l’esperienza è stata
così traumatica, a volte avendo colpito gli affetti
familiari, che ci si proietterà in un futuro
non più totalmente programmabile (come forse
ci illudevamo potesse essere), ma subordinato ai
capricci di un virus malandrino e di altre possibili
evenienze. Qualche paura rimarrà in noi.
Ho un ricordo riferito al periodo post bellico,
durante il quale mia madre continuava
a mantenere alte le scorte alimentari casalinghe
per timore di ritornare al tempo di guerra,
quando mancava quasi tutto, se non tutto,
e ci si era trovati alla mercé di quella
che si chiamava ‘borsa nera’.
Sono fondati i timori per ciò che potrebbe
