“We can work together without talking much, as if we simply understand what
the other one is thinking.”
“LIGHT IS” was founded in 2019 by two friends who graduated from the Faculty of Architecture,
Chulalongkorn University. Vida studied Industrial Design, while Papon studied Architecture.
Vida is interested in lighting since her school days and became part of lighting team in the
Faculty’s theatrical group. After graduation, Vida jumped right into lighting design profession,
while Papon continued to work as an architect in Singapore for few years before joining
the same lighting design company. They both later went on to pursue a master’s degree in
lighting design in Germany and also did their internships in New York. During the past few
years the two have had not many opportunities to work together, but when they do they know
they work well and would make a good design partner. And this was the starting point of
LIGHT IS.

“When Papon came back to Thailand after working in New York for 7 years,
it was the same time Vida decided to leave her full-time job at one of
Thailand’s leading lighting design firms. We started working together on
some small projects with very few words exchanged, but we were able to
work hand-to-hand seamlessly as if we simply understand what the other
person is thinking. We agreed that we are going in the same direction with
the similar design approach. Since then, LIGHT IS was founded.”

“นักออกแบบแสงสว่างทางสถาปัตยกรรม” หรือ “Lighting
Designer” คืออีกหนึ่งอาชีพที่กำาลังเป็นที่จับตามองใน
วงการออกแบบเมืองไทย ASA Professional ได้มีโอกาส
พูดคุยกับสองนักออกแบบแสงรุ่นใหม่อย่าง “ก้อย” วิดา
เขมะจิตพันธุ์ และ “เต้” ปภณ เกษตรทัต สองเพื่อนสนิท
ที่ร่วมกันเปิดบริษัทออกแบบแสงในชื่อ “LIGHT IS”
“เราทางานต่อกันได้ โดยไม่ต้องพู ดอะไรเลย เหมือนรู้
ว่าอีกคนหนึ ่งคิดอะไรอยู่”
“LIGHT IS” ก่อตั้งเมื่อปี 2562 จากการรวมตัวของสอง
เพื่อนร่วมรุ่นคณะสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ-
มหาวิทยาลัย “ก้อย” จบจากสาขาออกแบบอุตสาหกรรม
ส่วน “เต้” จบจากสาขาสถาปัตยกรรม ก้อยสนใจเรื่องแสง
ตั้งแต่สมัยเรียน และได้เข้าไปเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของทีมงานเรื่อง
แสงในละครเวทีคณะ หลังจากเรียนจบจึงตัดสินใจทำางาน
ด้านออกแบบแสง ส่วนเต้หลังเรียนจบก็ไปเป็นสถาปนิกที่
สิงคโปร์ก่อนจะกลับมาทำางานที่บริษัทเดียวกันตามคำาชวน
ของก้อย ทั้งคู่ไปเรียนต่อปริญญาโทด้านการออกแบบแสง
ที่ประเทศเยอรมนีและฝึกงานที่นิวยอร์กเช่นเดียวกัน แม้
ช่วงเวลาที่ผ่านมาทั้งคู่จะมีโอกาสทำางานร่วมกันไม่มากนัก
แต่เมื่อพวกเขาได้ร่วมงานกันแล้ว ก็รู้ว่าสามารถทำางาน
ด้วยกันได้เป็นอย่างดี และเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของ LIGHT IS ใน
ทุกวันนี้
“เมื่อเต้กลับมาเมืองไทยหลังจากทางานที่นิวยอร์ก
ได้ 7 ปี พอดีกับก้อยที่ตัดสินใจลาออกจากการเป็ น
พนักงานประจาที่บริษัทออกแบบแสงแถวหน้าของไทย
เราได้เริ่มทางานเล็กๆด้วยกัน ตอนทางานคือเราคุย
กันน้อยมาก สามารถทางานผลัดมือต่อกันได้ โดยแทบ
จะไม่ต้องพู ดอะไรเลย เหมือนรู้ว่าอีกคนหนึ ่งคิดอะไรอยู่
และรู้สึกว่าเรามีแนวทางทางานคล้ายกันมาก จากนั้น
จึงได้ตั้งบริษัท LIGHT IS ขึ ้นมา”
“เรารู้แล้วว่าใครขาดตรงไหน อีกคนก็พยายามไปเติม
ที่ขาดไป”
จากจุดเริ่มต้นในปี 2562 จนถึงวันนี้ เต้และก้อย เป็นทั้ง
หุ ้นส่วนและพนักงานของบริษัท พวกเขารู้สึกว่าปริมาณงาน
ยังอยู ่ในสัดส่วนที่สามารถทำางานด้วยสองคนหลักๆ ได้
โดยอาจจะมีงานบางส่วนตัดออกไปให้ outsource ช่วยทำา
สิ่งสำาคัญสำาหรับทั้งสองคนในการทำางานบริหารคือ “การคุย
แลกเปลี่ยนกันให้มากและเติมในสิ่งที่อีกฝ่ ายหนึ ่งขาด”
ในส่วนของงานออกแบบก็เช่นกัน นั่นคือแบ่งงานกันในส่วน
ที่แต่ละคนถนัด เต้จบสถาปัตยกรรมหลัก จึงทำาให้มีความ
ถนัดในส่วนงานที ่เกี่ยวกับสถาปัตยกรรมและการก่อสร้าง
ในขณะที่ก้อยที ่มีพื้นฐานมาจากสาขาออกแบบอุตสาหกรรม
ก็จะถนัดงานออกแบบภายในหรืองานที่ต้องลงรายละเอียด
มากกว่า

“We know what is missing in each other, and the other person would try to fill in
the missing piece.”
From the beginning in 2019 until today, Papon and Vida is both partners and employees of
the company. They are able to cope with the current workload with some tasks being cut off
to the outsources. What they both found important in the studio management is “To openly
discuss a lot and to fill in what the other person lacks.” This approach also applies to the
design work. They divided their work to match their expertise. Papon graduated in architecture,
so he has an aptitude for architecture and construction-related work. While Vida has a background
in industrial design, so she is better at interior design work or work that requires more
details.
“For the first few projects, we let the work flows freely, and we observed which
areas the other person excels at. Now we know what the other person’s strengths
and weaknesses are so we could fill in the missing points. While in the USA, Papon
worked mostly in the design process but rarely in management. Instead, Vida
used to take charge as a Project Designer in Thailand working on the scope of
design, setting up work schedules, and coordinating with all parties. So, she is
more apt when it comes to management than Papon.”
“Lighting design is about creating a sense of space.”
Recently, Thais are becoming more familiar with the lighting design profession. However,
LIGHT IS, who had the opportunity to work globally, still thinks that although the lighting
design profession in Thailand is starting to be acknowledged, it is still in a limited domain.
Unlike some countries, where lighting designers have already been well recognized as
a respectable profession and perform in a very clear scope of work, and have a more efficient
working system.
