Siriyot Chaiamnuay and Arisara Chaktranon,
the two principal architects of Onion, intended
to design the exterior surface of the building
rather than concealing the building structure.
The architects focused on creating a space
to welcome and connect people from outside
before entering the building, choosing a white
precast concrete wall to create a sense of
cleanliness for the exterior surface. It also
saves on the construction budget which
had been put toward spending on the gold
aluminum flap that makes it look impressive,
which helps create a captivating memory of
buildings and places. This is considered as
another form to convey the spirit of contemporary
Thainess.
Opting for a folded gold aluminum sheet is
a hidden intention of the architect to convey
the glow and glory of this old historic city.
This aluminum sheet is coated with gold
paint in the vertical plane and celadon green
in the horizontal plane to add more colorful
and dramatic features to the design. The gold
color on the building’s surface embraces and
interplays with the natural light that varies
during the time of the day. In the morning,
the sunlight hits the building’s surface and
creates the most intense golden glow. While
during the day, the light thoroughly penetrates
the building’s surface, it adds dramatic dimensions
to the cascading facade. And at night,
when the building’s exterior is hit by artificial
lights that are intermittently highlighted, the
illumination creates another theatrical visual
ambiance and dramatic movement of shadows.
The building façade does not only serve to enclose
the space or express the beauty of the building but,
together with lighting design, creates a new memory
for a department store building.
