2 Theoretical background The pore sizes in materials produce a certain shape of isotherm, which can be subdivided into groups based on the pore size and adsorbate-adsorbent interaction 121 , see Figure 14. Isotherm Type I presents microporous materials showing a sharp increase of adsorbed volume at low relative pressures and is referred as micropore filling. At higher relative pressures a plateau occurs. No monolayer formation is obtained due to the comparable size of the adsorbed gas kinetic diameter and the pore diameter (dkin~dpore). A monolayer is formed (point 1 in Figure 14) followed by multilayer formation in mesoporous materials presented by isotherm type IV (point 2 in Figure 14). Adsorbent dense material obtaining mono and multilayers is schematically drawn in isotherm type II. The thin top layer provides the membrane with its selective features, whereas the other layers essentially provide mechanical strength. Transporting of molecules through the stack of layers is influenced by all layers present, which essentially form a series of resistances to the transport. Multicomponent mixtures mass transport can be further influenced by mutual interactions between the different components presented by Benes. 91,122 In this section, emphasis will be on the transport of single gasses. The permeance is the flux divided by the applied pressure difference over the layer. The permeance depends, amongst other things, on the nature of the gas, the pore morphology and the applied conditions. 32
