Admission<br />
High School Students — Concurrent<br />
Secondary Enrollment<br />
With the written recommendation <strong>of</strong> a high school guidance<br />
counselor, an academically gifted high school senior may enroll in<br />
a maximum <strong>of</strong> one three-semester-hour freshman-level course<br />
per term while finishing work toward a high school diploma.<br />
Such a student is required to demonstrate a cumulative grade<br />
point average <strong>of</strong> at least 3.5 (B+) in high school academic subjects.<br />
The student may continue to register as a “concurrent secondary”<br />
student until graduation from high school. For purposes <strong>of</strong><br />
categorization, the student is treated as having provisional status.<br />
Pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> English Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />
Students enrolling for the first time with <strong>UMUC</strong> whose native<br />
language is not English must provide pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> English pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />
by providing one <strong>of</strong> the following documents to the field<br />
representative at the time <strong>of</strong> registration for courses:<br />
1. An <strong>of</strong>ficial copy <strong>of</strong> the results <strong>of</strong> the Test <strong>of</strong> English as a<br />
Foreign Language (TOEFL) indicating a score <strong>of</strong> at least 213<br />
on the computerized test version (or at least 550 on the written<br />
exam). <strong>UMUC</strong> does not administer this test. It is the student’s<br />
responsibility to arrange for testing and to see that an <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />
copy <strong>of</strong> the test results reaches <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> in Heidelberg.<br />
The TOEFL school code for <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> is 0715.<br />

at: www.toefl.com or by calling 0031-26-352-1577,<br />
or<br />
2. Evidence <strong>of</strong> attendance and graduation from a secondary<br />
school in which the language <strong>of</strong> instruction was English.<br />
Generally, a student will need to be able to demonstrate<br />
attendance in such a secondary school for a minimum <strong>of</strong><br />
three years in addition to having graduated from the school,<br />
or<br />
3. An <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript from a regionally accredited U.S. college<br />
or university indicating a grade <strong>of</strong> C or higher in an English<br />
composition course.<br />
In addition to providing pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> English pr<strong>of</strong>iciency, the applicant<br />
must meet the “Admission Requirements” noted previously. If<br />
there is a question <strong>of</strong> eligibility, contact the Director, Student<br />
Affairs in Heidelberg.<br />

Educational Leave <strong>of</strong> Absence (ELA)<br />
Program (formerly “Bootstrap”<br />
Program)<br />
Educational Leave <strong>of</strong> Absence Program (ELA) is a special program<br />
which allows servicemembers to enroll with a university to complete<br />
degree requirements through full-time study. This study may be<br />
accomplished through <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> at local education centers<br />
or, in some cases, at a State <strong>of</strong> Maryland institution in the United<br />
States. A student interested in this program should first check<br />
with his or her own branch <strong>of</strong> service to check eligibility guidelines.<br />
