Students may seek an academic major in information systems<br />

management.<br />

Major in Information Systems<br />

Management<br />

The information systems management major provides students<br />

with the skills needed to successfully participate in and support<br />

the increasingly visible role <strong>of</strong> information technology in<br />

corporate decision making. The curriculum focuses on the<br />

methods, concepts, and practical applications <strong>of</strong> information<br />

systems in the workplace. It develops abilities to conceptualize<br />

and manage the design and implementation <strong>of</strong> high-quality<br />

information systems.<br />

Objectives<br />

The student who graduates with a major in information systems<br />

management will be able to:<br />

• Apply appropriate problem-solving methodologies to the<br />

analysis and solution <strong>of</strong> problems.<br />

• Apply standard systems practices to the planning,<br />

implementation, management, and evaluation <strong>of</strong> information<br />

systems.<br />

• Communicate effectively using oral, written, and multimedia<br />

techniques.<br />

• Manage change in the dynamic and global environments <strong>of</strong><br />

automated systems.<br />

• Use technology to research information needed to produce<br />

informed decisions for organizations.<br />

• Identify relationships between programming languages and<br />

information systems.<br />

• Demonstrate skills in systems analysis appropriate to the<br />

management <strong>of</strong> information systems projects.<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> Bachelor’s Degrees<br />

• Demonstrate skills in the design, creation, maintenance, and<br />

reporting functions <strong>of</strong> database systems and database systems<br />

management.<br />

• Use a systems approach to select hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware for<br />

an organization.<br />

• Evaluate ethical issues related to information systems, work<br />

productivity, and human factors.<br />

Requirements for the Major<br />

A major in information systems management requires the<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> 30 semester hours in information systems<br />

management; at least 15 <strong>of</strong> which must be earned in courses<br />

numbered 300 or above. Specific course requirements are listed<br />

below. Within the information systems management major,<br />

students may complete general study in the subject or choose a<br />

more structured track in information assurance.<br />

Information Systems Management Coursework (30 s.h.)<br />

Required Foundation Courses (15 s.h.)<br />

All students majoring in information systems management must<br />

take a course in a programming language (COBOL, C++, C,<br />

Java, or Visual Basic) and the following foundation courses:<br />

IFSM 300 Information Systems in Organizations (3)<br />

IFSM 310 S<strong>of</strong>tware and Hardware Concepts (3)<br />

IFSM 410 Database Concepts (3)<br />

IFSM 461 Systems Analysis and Design (3)<br />

Core and Supplemental Major Courses (15 s.h.)<br />

The distribution <strong>of</strong> core and supplemental major courses differs<br />

depending on whether the student chooses to complete general<br />

study or the specialized track. Students completing general study<br />

must complete 9 semester hours in core coursework and 6 semester<br />

hours in supplemental major coursework, as described below.<br />

Students in the information assurance track complete 6 semester<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> core coursework and 9 semester hours in supplemental<br />

major coursework, as described under the track requirements.<br />

Students completing general study in information systems<br />

management must take one <strong>of</strong> the following core courses:<br />

IFSM 302 Workplace Productivity (3)<br />

IFSM 303 Human Factors in Information Systems (3)<br />

IFSM 304 Ethics in the Information Age (3)<br />

IFSM 320 Office Automation (3)<br />

Students completing general study in information systems<br />

management must take two <strong>of</strong> the following core courses:<br />

IFSM 425 Decision Support and Expert Systems (3)<br />

IFSM 430 Information Systems and Security (3)<br />

IFSM 438 Project Management (3)<br />

IFSM 450 Telecommunication Systems in<br />

Management (3)<br />

Students completing general study in information systems<br />

management must also take two upper-level supplemental major<br />

courses from <strong>of</strong>ferings in computer and information science,<br />

computer information technology, computer science, computer<br />

studies, and information systems management. Students should<br />

be careful to ensure that all prerequisites have been met before<br />

choosing these courses.<br />
