<strong>UMUC</strong> Associate Degrees<br />
<strong>UMUC</strong> Associate Degrees<br />
<strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers programs <strong>of</strong> study leading to University <strong>of</strong> Maryland University College associate degrees and bachelor’s degrees.<br />
Course <strong>of</strong>ferings vary from education center to education center, and students should consult with <strong>UMUC</strong> field representatives at their<br />
local education center about programs <strong>of</strong>fered in their community. Students with <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> may pursue the Associate Degree in<br />
General Curriculum or one <strong>of</strong> the Associate Degrees in Specialized Curricula (Accounting, Business and Management, Computer Studies,<br />
Foreign Language Area Studies [German, Italian, and Spanish], Management Studies, Mathematics, and Women’s Studies). All requirements<br />
noted involve lower-level courses, although appropriate upper-level courses may be substituted.<br />

Common Associate Degree Requirements<br />
1. The Associate <strong>of</strong> Arts degree (AA) requires the completion <strong>of</strong> a minimum <strong>of</strong> 60 semester hours, at least 15 <strong>of</strong> which<br />
must be taken through <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />
2. Of these 60 semester hours, 32 semester hours must be earned in courses that fulfill the general education<br />
requirements listed below.<br />

3. The remaining 28 semester hours must satisfy the requirements <strong>of</strong> the curriculum the student has selected.<br />
4. A grade point average <strong>of</strong> 2.0 or higher in all courses taken through <strong>UMUC</strong> is required.<br />
5. A student should complete one associate degree before applying for another one.<br />
General Education Requirements<br />
(GER)<br />
General Education Requirements are part <strong>of</strong> all University <strong>of</strong><br />
Maryland University College associate degree programs. The GER<br />
for associate degree programs include at least 32 semester hours <strong>of</strong><br />
credit in courses selected to provide a solid cultural and intellectual<br />
foundation for the student’s education.<br />
Associate Degree General Education<br />
Requirements<br />
Communications (9 s.h.)<br />
• ENGL 101 or ENGL 101X (3 s.h.) must be completed<br />
within the first 15 s.h. with <strong>UMUC</strong>. Placement test required.<br />
May not be earned through credit by examination.<br />
• Another writing course (3 s.h.)<br />
• A third course in writing or speech (3 s.h.)<br />
No more than 3 semester hours <strong>of</strong> writing credit may be earned<br />
through credit by examination.<br />
Arts and Humanities (6 s.h.)<br />
• One course each in two <strong>of</strong> the following disciplines: ARTH,<br />
ARTT, HIST, HUMN, MUSC, PHIL, THET, dance,<br />
literature, or foreign language.<br />
Behavioral and Social Sciences (6 s.h.)<br />
• One course each in two <strong>of</strong> the following disciplines: ANTH,<br />
BEHS, CCJS (only CCJS 105), ECON, GEOG, GERO,<br />
GVPT, PSYC, or SOCY. Not all GERO courses apply.<br />
Biological and Physical Sciences (7 s.h.)<br />
• A science lecture course (3 s.h.) with related laboratory course<br />
(1 s.h.) or<br />
A science course combining lecture and laboratory (4 s.h.)<br />
• Any other science course (3 s.h.)<br />
Courses from the following disciplines satisfy both requirements:<br />
ASTR, BIOL, BSCI, CHEM, GEOL, NSCI, PHYS,<br />
biotechnology, botany, entomology, general science, and zoology.<br />
Mathematics (3 s.h.)<br />
• MATH 105, MATH 107, or a course at or above the level <strong>of</strong><br />
college algebra. Must be completed within the first 15 s.h.<br />
with <strong>UMUC</strong>. Placement test required.<br />
NOTE: MATH 107 or any higher-level mathematics course is<br />
required for majors in all computing areas and most businessrelated<br />
areas.<br />
Library Research (1 s.h.)<br />
• LIBS 150 Information Literacy and Research Methods must<br />
be completed within the first 15 semester hours with <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />
Total 32 s.h.<br />
Curriculum Requirements (28 s.h.)<br />
In addition to the general education requirements, students must<br />
take 28 semester hours <strong>of</strong> coursework related to their educational<br />
goals; at least 9 semester hours in core or core-related courses for<br />
the chosen curriculum must be completed with <strong>UMUC</strong>. They<br />
may choose a general curriculum or a specialized curriculum with<br />
its own particular requirements. Students must earn a grade <strong>of</strong> C<br />
or higher in all core or core-related curriculum courses. Students<br />
who anticipate seeking a bachelor’s degree should select courses<br />
that will advance that goal.<br />
