Fees<br />

Fees charged to <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> students fall into several<br />

categories, as outlined in this section. Payment may be made by<br />

check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard or Visa). Checks<br />

should be made payable to University <strong>of</strong> Maryland University<br />

College.<br />

Application<br />

$30<br />

Fee for establishing the student’s permanent record, the <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

university document from which transcripts are issued.<br />

Non-refundable. Payable at the time <strong>of</strong> first registration with<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Maryland University College. Not required <strong>of</strong><br />

consortium students until they declare their intent to pursue a<br />

certificate or degree through <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong>.<br />

Tuition<br />

Payable at the time <strong>of</strong> registration. A member <strong>of</strong> the Armed Forces<br />

may be entitled to full or partial tuition assistance from the United<br />

States Government. Students may also qualify for Veterans Affairs<br />

education benefits and other forms <strong>of</strong> financial assistance. Further<br />

information follows later in this Catalog.<br />

Late Registration<br />

Charged to students who do not register and make full payment<br />

<strong>of</strong> fees prior to the start <strong>of</strong> the term.<br />

Change <strong>of</strong> Registration<br />

Charged to students who change registration from one course to<br />

another after the start <strong>of</strong> the term.<br />

Returned Check<br />

$30<br />

Charged when a check is returned unpaid by a bank. A student who<br />

stops payment on a check for tuition is neither disenrolled nor relieved<br />

<strong>of</strong> responsibility for paying tuition and fees.<br />

Declined Credit Card<br />

$30<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong>’s processing fee for any credit card charge that is<br />

declined by the student’s bank. A student who initiates a charge<br />

back on a credit card payment is neither disenrolled nor relieved<br />

<strong>of</strong> responsibility for paying tuition and fees.<br />

Examination to Establish Credit<br />

Current tuition rate per semester hour<br />

Charged for each semester hour <strong>of</strong> credit that the student seeks to<br />

establish through <strong>UMUC</strong>’s course-challenge examinations and<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong>’s foreign language examinations. This fee should<br />

accompany the application for examination.<br />

Transcript<br />

$5<br />

Charged for each academic transcript issued by <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong><br />

except those sent to another Maryland public two- or four-year<br />

institution.<br />

Rush Transcript<br />

$20<br />

Special handling. Transcript processed within 24 hours.<br />

Diploma<br />

$50<br />

Payable for each diploma application filed. Non-refundable.<br />

Refunds<br />

The refund policy applies to tuition only. Other fees are not<br />

refundable. A student who withdraws from a course before the<br />

first class will receive a full refund. A student who withdraws<br />

after classes begin may be refunded a portion <strong>of</strong> the tuition as<br />

determined by the date <strong>of</strong> withdrawal. All refunds will be<br />

computed from the date the Application for Withdrawal is<br />

formally initiated at an education center (not from the date <strong>of</strong> the<br />

last class attended) according to the following schedule:<br />

• If no more than one-eighth <strong>of</strong> the class meetings have been<br />

held at the time the withdrawal is initiated, the University<br />

will refund 75 percent <strong>of</strong> the tuition.<br />

• If more than one-eighth but not more than one-fourth <strong>of</strong> the<br />

class meetings have been held at the time the withdrawal is<br />

initiated, the University will refund 25 percent <strong>of</strong> the tuition.<br />

• If more than one-fourth <strong>of</strong> the class meetings have been held<br />

at the time the withdrawal is initiated, no tuition will be<br />

refunded.<br />

For 1 s.h. weekend seminars, no tuition will be refunded if the<br />

withdrawal is initiated after the seminar has begun.<br />

For distance education courses, a full refund <strong>of</strong> tuition will be<br />

given if a cancellation is initiated prior to the starting date <strong>of</strong> the<br />

course. Seventy-five percent <strong>of</strong> tuition will be refunded if no<br />

more than one-eighth <strong>of</strong> the number <strong>of</strong> weeks for which the<br />

course is scheduled have elapsed when the withdrawal is initiated.<br />

If more than one-eighth but not more than one-fourth <strong>of</strong> the<br />

number <strong>of</strong> weeks for which the course is scheduled have elapsed<br />

when the withdrawal is initiated, <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> will refund<br />

25 percent <strong>of</strong> the tuition. If more than one-fourth <strong>of</strong> the weeks<br />

for which the course is scheduled have elapsed at the time the<br />

withdrawal is initiated, no tuition will be refunded.<br />

Exceptions to the refund policy may apply during periods <strong>of</strong><br />

heightened military activity. Requests for exceptions will require<br />

written documentation from an appropriate authority.<br />

Student Indebtedness<br />

All students who incur debts to <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> during a<br />

particular term must clear them to be permitted to register for the<br />

next term. Requests for transcripts, evaluations, and diplomas<br />

will be held until all financial obligations have been cleared.<br />

Outstanding debts will be collected against any refunds due the<br />

student. After 120 days, uncollected debts will be forwarded to<br />

the State Central Collection Unit (SCCU) <strong>of</strong> the State <strong>of</strong><br />

Maryland. SCCU debt is a serious matter; SCCU reports<br />

delinquent student accounts to major credit reporting entities.<br />

This report can impair credit ratings for up to seven years.<br />
