Alumni Association<br />

The <strong>UMUC</strong> Alumni Association was established in 1990 to<br />

support, enhance, and promote <strong>UMUC</strong> and its community <strong>of</strong><br />

alumni and students worldwide. The Alumni Association reaches<br />

out to all members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>UMUC</strong> community with opportunities<br />

to become involved in association activities as well as pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

and personal development seminars and workshops.<br />

With a membership <strong>of</strong> 100,000 alumni worldwide, the association<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers programs and services that are beneficial to both alumni<br />

and students. In addition to funding scholarships for <strong>UMUC</strong><br />

students, the association seeks to encourage alumni and students<br />

to participate actively in the <strong>UMUC</strong> community by attending<br />

events, volunteering, and staying connected to their alma mater<br />

in ways that contribute to its success.<br />

Membership in the <strong>UMUC</strong> Alumni Association is automatic<br />

upon graduation; there are no applications or fees. Following are<br />

just a few <strong>of</strong> the benefits <strong>of</strong> being a <strong>UMUC</strong> alumnus:<br />

• Regular issues <strong>of</strong> the Achiever alumni magazine.<br />

• Eligibility to apply for a <strong>UMUC</strong> Alumni Association affinity<br />

credit card.<br />

• Discounted GEICO automobile insurance.<br />

• Discounts at <strong>UMUC</strong>’s Virtual Bookstore.<br />

• Networking opportunities and access to career resources.<br />

Career and Cooperative Education<br />

Center<br />

The Career and Cooperative Education Center at <strong>UMUC</strong> serves<br />

all <strong>UMUC</strong> undergraduate and graduate students and alumni<br />

worldwide. It also serves the employer community by preparing<br />

self-aware employees who know their strengths, skills, values,<br />

and uniqueness, and where they might potentially fit in today’s<br />

global marketplace.<br />

Many resources are <strong>of</strong>fered by the center to help students and<br />

alumni explore and achieve their academic goals and gain the<br />

skills they need to be self-sufficient in pursuing those goals.<br />

Students and alumni may take advantage <strong>of</strong> career resources by<br />

accessing the Web page at www.umuc.edu/careercenter. The e-mail<br />

Programs and resources <strong>of</strong> the Career and Cooperative Education<br />

Center include:<br />

• Online resume posting.<br />

• Access to online job postings.<br />

• Online resources and links for career decision making and<br />

development.<br />

• Online career assessment by phone (or in person in Adelphi,<br />

Maryland).<br />

Special Services<br />

• Résumé review online, by phone (or in person in Adelphi,<br />

• Interview preparation.<br />

• Job posting notebooks (available online).<br />

Job search assistance <strong>of</strong>fered by the center includes the:<br />

• Job Development Seminar, <strong>of</strong>fered online and on site (in<br />

Adelphi, Maryland) for a fee. This seminar provides<br />

comprehensive information on preparing for and conducting<br />

a job search. Optional follow-up services include résumé<br />

revision and review and a mock interview session. Résumé<br />

referral is provided for eligible undergraduates who enroll in<br />

Cooperative Education.<br />

Information and Library Services<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> promotes the use <strong>of</strong> library technology, teaches courses<br />

in information technology and library use, and provides access to<br />

a variety <strong>of</strong> online library resources on its Web page at<br />

www.umuc.edu/library.<br />

Library Resources<br />

Students may access an extensive array <strong>of</strong> online journal databases<br />

and national and international newspapers via the Information<br />

and Library Services Web page at www.umuc.edu/library or<br />

through WebTycho. Authorized library users may access more<br />

than 100 databases, most <strong>of</strong> which index or link to full-text<br />

articles covering business, management, computer and information<br />

systems, science, social science, and arts and humanities. Database<br />

descriptions and tutorials for searching the online library databases<br />

are also available.<br />

Library Instruction and Research<br />

Assistance<br />

Students are <strong>of</strong>ten overwhelmed by or are unaware <strong>of</strong> the vastness<br />

<strong>of</strong> the resources — print, nonprint, and automated — available<br />

to them. <strong>UMUC</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers LIBS 150, Information Literacy and<br />

Research Methods, a required 1 s.h. course that focuses on<br />

developing information literacy skills. Topics include<br />

understanding the research process; developing research skills;<br />

selecting relevant print and electronic sources to answer research<br />

questions; effectively using Web search engines to find information;<br />

evaluating, organizing, and correctly citing the information found;<br />

and avoiding plagiarism. LIBS 150 must be taken within the<br />

student’s first 15 semester hours <strong>of</strong> coursework.<br />

Writing Resources<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> online services are available to students who are<br />

interested in academic help beyond the classroom. <strong>UMUC</strong> services<br />

provided online carry no charge. The Guide to Writing and Research<br />

is accessible at tychousa.umuc.edu/writinggde. The <strong>UMUC</strong> Effective<br />

Writing Center is accessible at www.umuc.edu/writingcenter.<br />
