MRKT 310 through MATH 130 — <strong>UMUC</strong> Course Descriptions<br />

Marketing<br />

Courses in marketing (designated MRKT) may be applied as<br />

appropriate (according to individual program requirements)<br />

toward:<br />

• a major or minor in marketing, business administration, or<br />

management studies;<br />

• a certificate in various business-related areas; and<br />

• electives.<br />

MRKT 310 Marketing Principles and Organization (3)<br />

An introduction to the field <strong>of</strong> marketing, intended to develop a<br />

general understanding and appreciation <strong>of</strong> the forces, institutions,<br />

and methods involved in marketing a variety <strong>of</strong> goods and<br />

services. Topics include segmentation, target marketing,<br />

positioning, developing new products, pricing, distributing and<br />

promoting goods and services, and sales and marketing<br />

management. Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

following courses: BMGT 350, MGMT 322, MRKT 310, or<br />

TMGT 322.<br />

MRKT 354 Integrated Marketing Communications (3)<br />

Prerequisite: MRKT 310. An in-depth study <strong>of</strong> promotional<br />

activities such as advertising, personal selling, sales promotions,<br />

and direct marketing (including use <strong>of</strong> the Internet). Emphasis is<br />

on strategic planning <strong>of</strong> promotional activities to communicate<br />

with customers to achieve marketing objectives. The relationship<br />

<strong>of</strong> integrated marketing communications to other elements <strong>of</strong><br />

promotional activities is also explored. Students may receive credit<br />

for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: BMGT 354 or MRKT 354.<br />

Mathematics<br />

Courses in mathematics (designated MATH) may be applied as<br />

appropriate (according to individual program requirements)<br />

toward:<br />

• the general education requirement in mathematics (with the<br />

exception <strong>of</strong> MATH 001, MATH 009, and MATH 012);<br />

and<br />

• electives.<br />

MATH 105, MATH 107, or a course at or above the level <strong>of</strong><br />

college algebra must be completed within the first 15 s.h. with<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong>. Students are advised to purchase a good scientific<br />

calculator.<br />

Placement tests are required for enrollment in MATH 001, 009,<br />

012, 105, and 107.<br />

MATH 001 Pre-Algebra (3)<br />

(Not open to students who have already successfully completed<br />

a higher-level mathematics course. Does not apply toward degree<br />

requirements. Yields institutional credit only.) Prerequisite: An<br />

appropriate score on a placement test. A study <strong>of</strong> whole numbers,<br />

integers, fractions, decimals and real numbers, variable<br />

expressions, first degree equations, ratio and proportion, percent,<br />

and geometry. All topics are employed to solve applied problems.<br />

Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses:<br />

MATH 001, MATH 100, or UCSP 198 Transitional<br />

Mathematics.<br />

MATH 009 Introductory Algebra (3)<br />

(Not open to students who have already successfully completed<br />

a higher-level mathematics course. Does not apply toward degree<br />

requirements. Yields institutional credit only.) Prerequisite:<br />

MATH 001 or an appropriate score on a placement test. A<br />

comprehensive review <strong>of</strong> fractions, percentages, operations with<br />

signed numbers, and geometric formulas. Basic algebraic topics<br />

include exponents, polynomials, and linear equations. Students<br />

may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following<br />

courses: MATH 009, MATH 009M, or MATH 100.<br />

MATH 012 Intermediate Algebra (3)<br />

(Not open to students who have already successfully completed<br />

a higher-level mathematics course. Does not apply toward degree<br />

requirements. Yields institutional credit only.) Prerequisite:<br />

MATH 009, or an appropriate score on the placement test. A<br />

study <strong>of</strong> problem-solving techniques in intermediate-level algebra.<br />

Numbers and algebraic properties, graphing skills, and applications<br />

drawn from a variety <strong>of</strong> areas (such as statistics, computing, and<br />

discrete mathematics) are emphasized. Topics include polynomials;<br />

factoring; exponents and their notation; linear, quadratic, and<br />

other equations; and inequalities. Students may receive credit for<br />

only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: MATH 012, MATH 101,<br />

MATH 101M, MATH 102, MATH 102M, MATH 199A, or<br />

MATH 199M.<br />

MATH 105 Mathematics: Contemporary Topics and Applications (3)<br />

(Not intended for students planning to take MATH 107 or<br />

higher-numbered courses; does not serve as a prerequisite for<br />

these courses.) Prerequisite: MATH 012 or an appropriate score<br />

on the placement test. A survey <strong>of</strong> contemporary topics in<br />

mathematics, covering applications and projects. Topics include<br />

problem solving, sequences and series, financial management,<br />

geometry, probability, and statistics.<br />

MATH 107 College Algebra (3)<br />

(The first course in the two-course series MATH 107-108. An<br />

alternative to MATH 115 Pre-Calculus.) Prerequisites:<br />

MATH 012, or an appropriate score on the placement test. An<br />

introduction to equations, inequalities, and absolute values and a<br />

study <strong>of</strong> functions and their properties, including the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> graphing skills with polynomial, rational, exponential, and<br />

logarithmic functions. Applications are also covered. Students<br />

may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses:<br />

MATH 107 or MATH 115.<br />

MATH 108 Trigonometry and Analytical Geometry (3)<br />

(The second course in the two-course series MATH 107-108.<br />

An alternative to MATH 115 Pre-Calculus.) Prerequisite:<br />

MATH 107 or an appropriate score on the placement test. An<br />

introduction to trigonometric functions, identities, and equations<br />

and their applications. Analytical geometry and conic sections are<br />

covered. Additional topics may include matrices, determinants,<br />

sequences, and series. Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong><br />

the following courses: MATH 108 or MATH 115.<br />

MATH 130 Calculus A (3)<br />

Prerequisite: MATH 108. An introduction to calculus. Topics<br />

include functions, continuity, derivatives, and applications <strong>of</strong><br />

derivatives including maximum-minimum problems, related rates<br />

and graphs <strong>of</strong> functions. Students may receive credit for only one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the following courses: MATH 130, MATH 140, or<br />

MATH 220.<br />
