Computer Studies<br />

General Education Requirements (32 s.h.)<br />

Computer Studies (15 s.h., <strong>of</strong> which at least 9 s.h. must<br />

be completed with <strong>UMUC</strong>)<br />

Computer Studies-Related Core Courses (15 s.h.)<br />

Students must take one <strong>of</strong> the following introductory computer<br />

courses:<br />

CMIS 102A Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> Programming I (3)<br />

IFSM 201 Introduction to Computer-Based Systems (3)<br />

Students must take the following programming course (or another<br />

appropriate programming language course):<br />

CMIS 141A Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> Programming II (3)<br />

Students must take two or more <strong>of</strong> the following courses for a total <strong>of</strong><br />

6 s.h.:<br />

CMIS 240/241 Data Structures and Abstraction (3)<br />

CMST Any lower-level course (not to exceed 3 s.h.)<br />

Other suitable computer classes - check with an academic advisor<br />

To complete a total <strong>of</strong> 15 s.h. <strong>of</strong> coursework in computing topics,<br />

students must take one or more computer-related courses (courses<br />

designated CMIS, CMIT, CMSC, CMST and IFSM).<br />

Electives (13 s.h.)<br />

Students must choose additional courses in accordance with<br />

their interests and goals to complete the 28 semester hours in<br />

curriculum coursework.<br />

Foreign Language Area Studies<br />

The specialized curricula for foreign language area studies give<br />

students the opportunity to focus on the language and culture <strong>of</strong><br />

a particular country, usually the country in which they live.<br />

Generally students are required to complete 12 semester hours in<br />

language core courses and 16 semester hours in courses related to<br />

the history and culture <strong>of</strong> the area. Specific courses are identified<br />

for each <strong>of</strong> the areas studied. Students should check with an<br />

academic advisor for choices in their selected area.<br />
