German<br />
Courses in German (designated GERM) may be applied as<br />
appropriate (according to individual program requirements)<br />
toward:<br />
• the general education requirements for arts and humanities<br />
and international perspective coursework;<br />
• a major or minor in humanities (when appropriate); and<br />
• electives.<br />
GERM 111 Elementary German I (3)<br />
(Assumes no prior knowledge <strong>of</strong> German. Fulfills the international<br />
perspective requirement.) An elementary study <strong>of</strong> German.<br />
Emphasis begins with oral communication skills, and leads to<br />
balanced pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in the four communication skills <strong>of</strong> listening,<br />
speaking, reading, and writing. Topics include basic structures,<br />
vocabulary, pronunciation, and writing, as well as elements <strong>of</strong><br />
culture, history, and geography. Authentic text from native<br />
speakers is used as much as possible. Students may receive credit<br />
for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: GERM 101 or GERM 111.<br />
GERM 112 Elementary German II (3)<br />
(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />
GERM 111. Continued basic study <strong>of</strong> German, emphasizing<br />
oral communication and leading to a balanced development <strong>of</strong><br />
pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in the four communication skills <strong>of</strong> listening, speaking,<br />
reading, and writing. Basic structures, vocabulary, pronunciation,<br />
and writing are practiced along with continued familiarity with<br />
culture, history, and geography. Oral and written authentic text<br />
from native speakers is used as much as possible. Students may<br />
receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: GERM 101<br />
or GERM 112.<br />
GERM 211 Intermediate German I (3)<br />
(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />
GERM 112. A continued study <strong>of</strong> German emphasizing balanced<br />
development <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in the four<br />
communication skills <strong>of</strong> listening, speaking, reading, and writing.<br />
Grammatical structure, vocabulary, pronunciation, and<br />
composition are practiced along with continued study <strong>of</strong> culture,<br />
history, and geography. Classes are conducted mostly in German<br />
and using authentic text from native speakers. Students may<br />
receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: GERM 114,<br />
GERM 102, or GERM 211.<br />
GERM 212 Intermediate German II (3)<br />
(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />
GERM 211. A continued study <strong>of</strong> German emphasizing balanced<br />
development <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in the four<br />
communication skills <strong>of</strong> listening, speaking, reading, and writing.<br />
Grammatical structure, vocabulary, pronunciation, and<br />
composition are practiced along with continued study <strong>of</strong> culture,<br />
history, and geography. Classes are conducted almost entirely in<br />
German and using authentic text from native speakers. Students<br />
may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses:<br />
GERM 115, GERM 201, or GERM 212.<br />
<strong>UMUC</strong> Course Descriptions — GERM 111 through GERM 334<br />
GERM 250 Intermediate Conversation (3)<br />
(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />
GERM 212. Further development <strong>of</strong> conversational skills in<br />
German. Focus is on comprehending and responding to questions<br />
seeking concrete information (such as personal background,<br />
interests, needs, family, and work) comprehending media<br />
announcements and reports, and describing visual situations.<br />
Emphasis is on vocabulary building and idiomatic expression.<br />
Short readings from a variety <strong>of</strong> increasingly sophisticated formal<br />
and informal sources are used. Students who have already<br />
successfully completed GERM 201 may not earn credit for this<br />
course.<br />
GERM 301 Review Grammar and Composition I (3)<br />
(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />
GERM 212. A systematic and thorough review <strong>of</strong> grammar with<br />
emphasis on the more idiomatic and difficult points <strong>of</strong> syntax.<br />
GERM 302 Review Grammar and Composition II (3)<br />
(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />
GERM 301. Further review <strong>of</strong> grammar with emphasis on the<br />
more idiomatic and difficult points <strong>of</strong> syntax.<br />
GERM 311 Advanced Conversation I (3)<br />
(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />
GERM 212 or consent <strong>of</strong> the faculty member. Training in<br />
understanding <strong>of</strong> German without being confused by syntactical<br />
structures. Emphasis is on conversing in a spontaneous and<br />
idiomatic manner.<br />
GERM 312 Advanced Conversation II (3)<br />
(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />
GERM 311 or consent <strong>of</strong> the faculty member. Further training<br />
in understanding German without being confused by syntactical<br />
structures. Emphasis is on conversing in a spontaneous and<br />
idiomatic manner.<br />
GERM 333 German Life and Culture I (3)<br />
(Conducted in English. Fulfills the historic or international<br />
perspective requirement.) A study <strong>of</strong> the historical, literary, and<br />
cultural traditions <strong>of</strong> Germany through the 18th century.<br />
GERM 334 German Life and Culture II (3)<br />
(Conducted in English. Fulfills the historic or international<br />
perspective requirement.) A study <strong>of</strong> the historical, literary, and<br />
cultural traditions <strong>of</strong> Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries.<br />
Field trips are included.<br />
