Establishing Credit<br />

Students interested in learning more about EXCEL should<br />

contact the EXCEL academic advisor in Heidelberg. The advisor<br />

can give helpful information on how to:<br />

• Complete an EXCEL application, including a written<br />

narrative.<br />

• Attend an orientation.<br />

• Register for EXCL 301.<br />

Students must also:<br />

• Meet basic standards in English composition (either by having<br />

taken college writing courses or by qualifying for ENGL 101<br />

on the English placement test).<br />

• Be in good academic standing at <strong>UMUC</strong> (not on academic<br />

warning or probation).<br />

• Have sent all transcripts, exam scores, and military<br />

occupational specialty (MOS) scores to the Registrar’s Office,<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong>.<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> Foreign Language Examination<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> Foreign Language Examinations are for students<br />

completing degree requirements, not those seeking to determine<br />

their level <strong>of</strong> foreign language mastery. To be eligible for a <strong>UMUC</strong><br />

Foreign Language Examination, the student must have an Official<br />

Evaluation. A student who has attended elementary or secondary<br />

school where English was not the language <strong>of</strong> instruction can<br />

establish credit in that language only for certain courses. A native<br />

speaker <strong>of</strong> a foreign language may not earn lower-level credit or<br />

conversational courses credit in that language. To determine the<br />

courses in which he or she may be examined, the student must<br />

submit a Summary <strong>of</strong> Educational Experiences and translated<br />

transcripts from those schools. The Summary may be obtained by<br />

writing the Office <strong>of</strong> Evaluations at the address noted below.<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> reserves the right to determine the native<br />

language <strong>of</strong> a student and the level <strong>of</strong> exam to be taken.<br />

The examination fee is the current cost <strong>of</strong> tuition for a 3 s.h.<br />

course with <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong>. A check or money order for the<br />

correct amount should be mailed with an Application to Establish<br />

Credit by Examination in a Foreign Language to:<br />

Cooperative Education<br />

Cooperative Education (Co-op) at <strong>UMUC</strong> extends education<br />

beyond the traditional classroom experience by taking it into the<br />

workplace. Co-op <strong>of</strong>fers an ideal opportunity to gain or advance<br />

experience in a career while earning upper-level college credit to<br />

complete a bachelor’s degree.<br />

Cooperative Education courses are <strong>of</strong>fered in each <strong>of</strong> <strong>UMUC</strong>’s<br />

undergraduate disciplines with the course number 486A or 486B.<br />

Co-op integrates career-related work opportunities and academic<br />

theory. Appropriate work situations may include a current job, a<br />

new job, an internship, community service, or a field experience.<br />

Co-op positions may be paid or unpaid, part time or full time.<br />

For students pursuing a new position or a career change, Co-op<br />

counselors provide assistance in conducting a job search and<br />

locating pr<strong>of</strong>essional opportunities through the Job Development<br />

Seminar.<br />

Credit is based on completing six academic course requirements<br />

including a learning contract that outlines the new learning to be<br />

acquired as a result <strong>of</strong> the work experience and communication<br />

with a faculty sponsor. A letter grade is awarded for successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the course. Students may enroll in a Co-op course<br />

at any time during the year. A variety <strong>of</strong> course formats permits<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> students, regardless <strong>of</strong> location, to participate in<br />

Cooperative Education.<br />

To be eligible to apply to the program, a student must be seeking<br />

a degree from <strong>UMUC</strong> and be working in a position directly<br />

related to the student’s field <strong>of</strong> study. The position must <strong>of</strong>fer the<br />

opportunity for significant new learning and pr<strong>of</strong>essional exposure.<br />

To apply, students must meet the following criteria:<br />

• Have completed 30 semester hours toward a degree.<br />

• Have completed at least 9 semester hours <strong>of</strong> credit in the<br />

discipline in which the student plans to gain Co-op experience.<br />

• Have a GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.5 or better at <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

• Have completed at least 6 semester hours at <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

Students who are interested in finding out more about<br />

Cooperative Education should contact an academic advisor<br />

(Office <strong>of</strong> Evaluations) in Heidelberg. The advisor will confirm<br />

that the students meet the requirements and guide them through<br />

the registration process.<br />

External Sources <strong>of</strong> College Credit<br />

(Further details and regulations are given in Appendix A and<br />

Appendix B.)<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> will not award credit for courses that repeat work done<br />

elsewhere. Students who have earned credit at other colleges or<br />

universities are responsible for determining whether courses they<br />

plan to take at <strong>UMUC</strong> would duplicate any previously earned<br />

credit. In certain disciplines, some <strong>of</strong> the content <strong>of</strong> community<br />

college courses may overlap that <strong>of</strong> beginning upper-level <strong>UMUC</strong><br />

courses. Students who are in doubt should consult a <strong>UMUC</strong>-<br />

<strong>Europe</strong> academic advisor before registering. Note that the<br />

maximum credit allowed from all nontraditional sources (credit<br />

by exam, prior learning, military) may not total more than onehalf<br />

<strong>of</strong> the total degree requirements.<br />

One <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong>, Adelphi, and Asia<br />

A student who has done satisfactory work in <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> is<br />

encouraged to enroll in any <strong>of</strong> the regularly scheduled terms<br />

elsewhere within <strong>UMUC</strong> without having to be readmitted.<br />

Because faculty and courses in <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> and <strong>UMUC</strong>-<br />

Asia meet the same academic standards as those for the home<br />

campus, <strong>UMUC</strong>-Adelphi, courses <strong>of</strong>fered overseas carry resident<br />

credit identical to that earned on the home campus.<br />

A student may earn resident credit toward an associate or bachelor’s<br />

degree entirely through study with <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> or in<br />

combination <strong>of</strong> study in <strong>UMUC</strong>-Asia and/or <strong>UMUC</strong>-Adelphi.<br />
