Competition information
Final competition information for MTBO
Detailed information for each stage
Show consideration
The competition areas are popular recreation
areas. Please show consideration
to members of the public and other
traffic in the competition area, signal
clearly and pay attention when passing
others in the terrain.
The competition areas also include
nature reserves and nature protection
areas. We are privileged to use these
areas and have a responsibility to protect
them. Please take care to not cause
additional erosion of the nature by
riding so as to broaden paths or cutting
corners. Littering in the terrain shall
not be tolerated – this includes leaving
rubbish (such as empty gel sachets or
punctured inner tubes) at control sites.
In Sweden, the Police can issue fines for
littering, including small items such as
confectionary wrappers.
Safety
A helmet is compulsory, otherwise any
clothing is permitted. Competitors take
part at their own risk.
Watch out for bike thieves! Bring your
own lock and lock your bike when you
leave it unattended. Bike stands will be
available at the arenas.
MTBO rules in brief
Competitors must use or bring a bicycle
on all parts of the course from start
to finish - this includes riding, pushing or
carrying – but you may not leave your
bike.
Cycling is only allowed on roads and
paths, asphalt and gravel surfaces and
surfaces marked with orange or black
spotted markings according to the
current map standard ISMTBOM 2022.
It is mandatory to follow Swedish traffic
rules and traffic signs. Show regard to
other traffic, follow officials’ instructions
and be careful when crossing trafficked
roads. It is not allowed to cut through
the forest between paths, cross open areas
marked with yellow or areas marked
as out of bounds on the map. According
to the competition rules it is not allowed
to ride a bike outside the area of the
map. The competition is conducted according
to Swedish Orienteering Federation
rules for MTBO (Version 2017-01-09).
Entries
Entries remain open at oringen.se or at
Competitor Services at O-Ringen square
or the at the competition arenas. The
deadline for registration for the 3-day
MTBO is 22/7 at 21:00. Entry on the day
for Stage Start courses is possible up to
and including 60 minutes before the last
start time.
Training map
There is a training map that covers a
smaller area adjacent to the Östersund
map available to buy from the XXX
store. Controls without punches/timing
are available 7/17–7/26. The area is a
mixture of forest and residential areas.
Parking is at the ÖP hall in Odensala,
Östersund. A disc golf course is located
in a smaller part of the area - watch out
for flying discs!
Maps
All maps are revised in 2023 and laser
printed on laminated paper. The map
size is A3 for all classes during all stages.
Punching system
Contactless punching with SportIdent
Air+ control units and SI Air+ Cards
(SIAC). All controls are equipped with
a powerful unit that registers punches
when the control is passed within 1.8
meters. It is the competitor’s responsibility
to have a functioning SIAC and to
verify that the SIAC beeps and flashes as
confirmation of punching, so take care!
If such confirmation is not obtained,
punch the map with the back-up pin
punch present on the control.
Competitors who do not possess a
personal SIAC must reserve a rental SIAC
and collect it at Competitor services. We
recommend reserving rental SIACs via
oringen.se. Test controls will be available
at the arena for those that need to familiarise
themselves with the system before
the start! SIAC battery test units will also
be available at the verification station.
The SIAC contains a small battery
which needs to be replaced after around
three years to maintain reliability. The
date for the next service can be checked
on sportident.com/siacservice.
Controls
Control points are marked by an orienteering
control kite, with an SI Air+ unit
and control code number mounted on
fiberglass cane. A pin punch is available
as a back-up if the SI Air+ unit is not
functioning correctly.
There are many controls in the forest,
so check the control codes carefully!
Control codes
Control codes are printed on the map
besides the control circle. There are no
loose control descriptions.
Markings in the terrain
• Blue-yellow tapes mark prohibited
areas and are also used where two
paths pass close to each other. It is
prohibited to cross the blue-yellow
tapes!
• Red-white tapes are used to warn
about a dangerous object in the terrain
, e.g road barriers or steep drops
that come suddenly and may not be
marked as dangerous on the map.
• White tapes are used to mark an
indistinct path in the terrain.
Competitor numbers
Every participant must display their
competitor number attached to the
bicycle. Competitor numbers can be
collected at Competitor services at O
-Ringen square until Sunday evening at
21.00 and during the competition days
at Competitor services at the arena.
Cable ties for affixing the race number
to the bike can be obtained when the
number is collected.
Verification station
Participants should pass the verification
station on the route to the start. The
SIAC will be cleared and checked, and
if necessary allocated to the correct
competitor. The SIAC battery voltage
and latest battery replacement will also
be checked here.
Water
Water will be available at the arena, and
at the start on stage 2 only. No water
points will be available in the forest,
therefore it is recommended to carry
water on the bicycle or in a backpack.
Start procedure
Start times are allocated according to
the start list. Call up will be 2 minutes
before competitors’ allocated start time.
Upon entering the start lane, there will
be SIAC CHECK and then SIAC TEST
units. The map is collected 1 minute
before the start time. Competitors
should have both feet and the front
wheel behind the start line until the
start signal. Late start will be available
with a maximum of 30 minutes from
the original start time. Open classes use
a punching start. Due to some minor
overlap in planning between open class
and age-class courses, competitors in
open classes should report to the start
personnel to “book” a next available
start time upon arrival to the start. We
do not anticipate there will be much of a
wait for an appropriate time.
It is your responsibility as a competitor
to ensure you pick up the correct
map(s). Many classes have map
exchanges – in such cases competitors
will be provided with all maps for their
course at the start, and there will be no
exchange points in the terrain.
Finish
The finish is situated at the Arena for all
stages. There will be an electronic finish
line. The finish time is registered when
the SIAC crosses the finish line.
Maximum time permitted
Sprint 2 hours.
Middle distance 3 hours.
Long distance 4 hours.
Red Exit
In case of problems when downloading,
take the Red Exit in the finish tent. The
Red Exit can also be used if you need
to report a technical problem, wildlife in
the competition area or a violation of
competition rules.
Aborted race
Competitors who retire from the race
must report to download at the finish as
soon as possible and pass through the
finish and download as usual. If this is
not possible for any reason, you should
immediately contact the MTBO competition
organisers or competitor services
at O-Ringen square.
Competitor service
A competitor service point will be available
in each arena for:
• direct registration to open classes,
• collection of rental SIAC cards
• collection of competitor numbers
The following services will be
available at the arena:
• catering/kiosk
• bike service point
• map stand sales and hire (50 kr/day)
• changing rooms
First aid
A first aid point will be available at each
arena. There are no first aid points in the
terrain. In case of emergency call 112. In
non-emergency situations the organisers
can be reached
Equipment
Competitors must have a bike with them
at all times and wear a helmet. Competitors
may carry compasses as well as
tools and spare parts during the competition,
but may not use spare parts that
have been carried into the competition
area by anyone other than themselves
or fellow competitors. Electric bikes are
not permitted.
Results
Results can be found at www.oringenonline.se
and at the arenas
Prizegiving
Prizes to stage winners are given out at
the arenas – the prizegiving for each
class will take place on a rolling basis as
soon as possible after the class results
are decided. The prizegiving for the
overall 3-day competition will be conducted
at the O-Ringen square in Åre
on Wednesday July 26 at 18:00. Prizes
to second and third placed competitors
can be collected from Competitor Services
after the prizegiving ceremony.
Protests
Protests against decisions by the head
organisers following a report of a rule
being broken must be submitted in
writing at the Red exit in the finish tent,
or to Competition Services at O-Ringen
Square, within two hours of the decision
being presented, for these to be communicated
Terrain
The competition terrain consists of
asphalt rollerski tracks, wider gravel roads
and rooty singletrack, with mostly good
ridability. The terrain is moderately hilly
with a few steeper paths. The ski stadium
area close to the arena has a dense network
of smaller indistinct paths, some of
which may not be mapped, so take care
to ensure you take the path you intend!
The area sees heavy recreation
traffic, please respect other users. We
have done our best to ensure that local
rollerskiers are aware of the competitions
to minimize traffic on the rollerski
track during the race, but be aware that
rollerskiers might still be out training in
the competition area.
The few forest and private roads in
the area are generally quiet, but do look
out for traffic and ensure you adhere to
normal rules of the road.
Maximum time
3 hours. Courses close 15:30.
• Slower cyclists must give way to overtaking cyclists.
• Do not stop directly at controls to read the map – please make way for
other competitors by moving a few metres away.
• It is the competitors’ duty to help injured fellow competitors.
• Do not leave litter in the forest, even at control sites! Please take all
packaging etc. to the finish line with you and ensure that they are
disposed of/recycled correctly.
Safety
Courses DH21 and DH20 pass through
a military area in the northernmost
part of the map. There is no planned
military activity happening during the
event, however respect should be given
to any military personnel who happen
to be in the area. There is the possibility
that UXO (unexploded ordinance)
may be found in the area, therefore it is
extra important to keep to the marked
paths and keep out of areas marked as
forbidden on the map, even if you intend
to retire from the competition. Entering
the area is done at one’s own risk. If any
UXO is found it must not be disturbed
