It hurt knowing he didn’t even care if he was caught, he was well aware this was
the beach we hung out on. He knew this was the beach where my Grandpa would
come to lie down and rest in the sun. He knew this was a small town we lived in,
and he did not care about anything but himself. This woman was one of many to
follow but was the end of our family as I knew it.
Not only did I just find out my Dad was cheang on my Mom, but weeks later my
Granny trying to protect me said to me “Brad he wasn’t your real dad anyway,
your dad le when you were a baby, Peter married your mom and adopted you”.
My whole life came crashing down around me, I had been lied to not only by my
Dad but now I find out my Mom lied to me as well and my whole family knew
about it. People I loved and trusted had been lying to me my whole life.
My Dad used to hit me black and blue with his belt. There were mes we would
be out as a family and I would do something to make him mad, and he would say,
when we get home, you are going to be belted. Oen hours later things would
have passed, and everyone was happy and enjoying the night out together I
remember a me leaving the Circus, we arrived home and as if he was waing for
us to get home he would say go to the room and then he would belt me for
whatever happened earlier that day. I never remember a me that he showed me
any grace, he would bear whatever was done as if he held a grudge, and when he
had the opportunity he would release it on my but, upper legs, and lower back,
whatever was in the swing of the belt if I didn’t stand sll, stay bent over reaching
for the floor.
This was not always our family, my folks were youth leaders when I was younger, I
remember the youth meengs at COGS church in Durban North, there were some
fun family mes and friendships. A Youth Camp at The Orange Farm as young as I
was le an impression on me, these things 30 plus years later I remember them as
a happy me in our lives.
Aer my parents separated, our house was sold, we were taken out of the
Chrisan school we had been atending for some years and my mom moved us to
the big city. I completed my standard 8 school year at a technical high school. The
school wasn’t for me, but it was obvious that I was good with my hands, and
finishing that year I went to technical college and started my studies to be an
