The cocaine had run out and the guy, in his late 20s, I was with punched me in the
face because of it, sping out blood I sat there thinking how I was going to deal
with his disrespect. It wasn’t long and we decided to take some bicycles and cycle
the 4 km to top up the cocaine, on the way back, the cocaine in my pocket, a taxi
was driving towards us, the opposite direcon we were peddling back to the
house from Woodstock.
I saw my opportunity for revenge. I peddled up next to him and as we approached
the oncoming taxi, I kicked him sending him directly into the front of the taxi and
it hit him. I didn’t stop, I peddled on laughing, all I could think was he got what
was coming to him.
I returned to my garage, finished the cocaine I bought, and sat down to watch the
rest of the rugby World Cup. Some hours later I heard the gate open, and
someone crawled into the bathroom, which was outside, it was him, he climbed
into the bath bloodied, and just lay there. He knew he had it coming, and I knew
he got what he deserved, I didn’t help him he sorted himself out over the next
few days and we never spoke of it again, Some weeks went by, and he eventually
moved on. I never saw him again.
I have years of stories similar to this of who I was becoming. This one oen comes
to my remembrance because I was convinced, I had killed him, and I felt jusfied
and rewarded knowing it. Thank God I was wrong, and I can today look back
remember who I was, and clearly see what God has done in my life.
I remember the days I had to steal to eat, the fear of being caught, the pains of
forced hunger. I remember lying on the floor bordering death my heart pounding
in my chest overdosed on cocaine. I look around today and I see broken people
who remind me of who I was, and I pray God If you did it for me you will do it for
them.
I sll have a Bible I had when I was a child living in a seemingly happy family
growing up in Durban North, I must have been 10 years old when I got it. I have
notes in it. One of them says “I am going to heaven to live with God”. Another “I
will always prosper in Jesus' Name” But my favorite to this very day says, “But
seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall
be added unto you” – Mathew 6:33. Sll another says, “open the door to life.”
