Four GCSE grades at 4 or above,
including either English or maths,
or a relevant qualification at
Level 2 or appropriate experience
plus an audition.
Our dance provision at Gateshead
College is delivered by a team of
friendly and highly trained, expert
staff. Supporting a rich timetable,
visiting artists and key industry
choreographers join us throughout
the year, to help you build an artistic,
creative, technical and professional
skills set.
You’ll also have the opportunity to
visit key dance events annually,
such as ‘Can You Dance?’ regionals
and Move it - London. All our dance
courses are designed to help you
prepare for higher education and
a sustainable career in the creative
sector.
You'll choose to specialise in either
commercial, contemporary or
musical theatre with the opportunity
to also try elements from all areas.
Commercial Dance
What will I learn?
This practical and physical
programme will develop your
commercial performance skills
across urban/commercial, jazz,
lyrical, ballet and choreography.
Assisting with progression on to
higher education courses, weekly
singing lessons in contemporary
and musical theatre will underpin
your audition preparation.
Theoretical sessions which focus
on progression routes, training
providers and potential dance
employment will further develop
your knowledge of the industry
and help with the UCAS application
process.
Contemporary Dance
What will I learn?
Our contemporary course
focuses on building technical skills
and knowledge of the industry
through technique, creativity and
performance. Participation in
contemporary, classical ballet, and
technical jazz specialised classes
is compulsory, along with the
option to take additional classes in
commercial and stamina classes.
The course provides workshop
opportunities with prominent
industry dancers and
choreographers, while our highly
trained and experienced team
will support you in building your
artistic, technical and professional
skills. Sessions geared around
viable progression routes, training
providers and potential dance
employment will develop your
knowledge of the industry.
Musical Theatre
What will I learn?
This specialist pathway within
dance will focus on the skills
required in musical theatre
performance. Working towards a
UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in
Performance and Production over
two years, this exciting course will
provide dance-based training in
musical theatre and will enable you
to progress on to a higher education
course with confidence, secure
in the knowledge that you are
prepared for the rigorous demands
of the industry.
You will combine in-depth vocal
and acting training with dance
techniques in this unique pathway,
tailored to explore material from the
world of professional theatre.
Throughout the course, you will
have the opportunity to master
the art of acting through song,
combining disciplines that will give
you the skills necessary to produce
moving theatrical performances.
You will learn new and challenging
material for performance
opportunities that will give you the
chance to shine as you put what you
have learned into practice.
