Prevention of Pollution
18.1 OBJECTIVE
The objective of this Chapter is to provide guidance on the considerations and requirements necessary
for MASS to meet the provisions of the IMO MARPOL Instrument and Annexes.
18.2 GENERAL
18.2.1 A MASS complying with the Code should meet international, national, regional and local requirements for the
prevention of marine pollution which are applicable to the area in which the vessel is operating.
18.2.2 Responsibility for the MASS to be properly equipped and maintained to meet the prevailing requirements rests
with the Owner/Operator.
18.2.3 It is also the responsibility of the Owner/Operator to ensure that a charterer of a MASS receives up-to-date and
adequate information on prevention of pollution in the area in which the charterer intends to operate. The
information may include the need to seek advice from local or harbour authorities, for which contact details should
be given.
18.2.4 The disposal of ship generated waste to port reception facilities is regulated in the UK through the Merchant
Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Port Waste Reception Facilities) Regulations 2009 (SI 2009 No.1776), as
amended. Further guidance on the applicability of these Regulations can be found in MGN 563 - Port Waste
Reception Facilities Regulations 2003 and the “Port Waste Management Planning – A Guide to Good Practice”
booklet available as an annex to MGN 563. MASS operators should ensure they manage their waste in a
sustainable manner and fulfil the applicable requirements (if any) of these Regulations.
18.2.5 All MASS should comply with the requirements of UK Regulations implementing MARPOL and environmental
protection requirements as applicable to the size and operating area of the vessel.
18.3 OIL POLLUTION
18.3.1 MASS should retain on board oil or oily mixtures for discharge to shore facilities.
18.4 GARBAGE
18.4.1 Being crewless, operation of the MASS should not generate substantial quantities of garbage or similar.
However, any maintenance or cargo handling operations aboard which generate such arisings must comply with
the provisions of the MARPOL annex as appropriate to the size of the vessel and material generated.
