SLEEPWELL | EXPERT TIPS 30
trical currents to the brain by mimicking the wavelengths,
thus contributing to sleep hygiene by increasing the duration
and quality of sleep phases.
Discovered in 2012, the Glenfatic system, also known as
the cell bath, has proven that cerebrospinal fluid circulates
between cells, cleansing the brain of harmful amyloid-beta
plaques and reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s by 4-5 times.
After this research was published in peer-reviewed journals,
the US Department of Defense decided to fund the study by
paying 4.3 million dollars for AugNOD. The study is led by
Don Tucker, a former professor and CEO of the BEL laboratory.
Tucker states that the main purpose of the technology
is to accelerate the glymphatic system and provide effective
brain cleansing, and adds; this technology promises us much
more. The University of North Carolina, Washington University
School of Medicine, Oregon Health Sciences University
are conducting the study together. On the other hand, scientists
from UNC and the University of Montana also support
the study.
The first data of the technology, which is the result of industry-university
collaboration, is very promising. By mimicking
electrical waves during REM sleep, the device was able to
increase REM duration by 13%. In the coming years, it is
thought to be used to treat neurodegenerative brain damage,
improve cognitive performance and reduce the risk of neurovascular
disorders.
The development of technology has led to different ideas on
many subjects. Sleep and technology were far from being
synonymous, especially due to the negative impact of blue
light emitted from mobile devices on sleep hygiene. At this
point, technology seems to be a candidate to play a role that
can improve the sleep process.
In the next 10 years, don’t be surprised if you see a wireless
headboard on your bedside table, or devices integrated into
your bed and pillow! Who knows, maybe there are some
people in our country who are concerned about this. Sleep
soundly.
