Series I.C. Research materials, 1903-1997, undated, bulk 1903-1961
Physical Description: 47.8 linear feet, 21 flat file folders
Scope and Content Note
This subseries contains circa 3,000 items of Matteo Della Corte's research materials,
including notes on his original research, notes taken from secondary sources,
documentary photographs and drawings. Two categories of materials hold particular
interest and document Della Corte's research on the graffiti and inscriptions of Pompeii:
his field notes, and his lucidi, tracings and drawings on vellum.
A collection of 71 bound notebooks contains Della Corte's field notes. The notes include
sketches of inscriptions, plans of buildings, and observations on house contents, as well
as other original documentation of Della Corte's research at Pompeii and related sites.
These notebooks also functioned as a general diary for Della Corte and often include
reading notes, addresses, drafts of letters, notes to himself, and other miscellaneous
material. A numbered series of these notebooks covers the period from 1907 to 1941, but
unnumbered notebooks cover the broader period from 1905 to 1959. These general field
notes are arranged in rough chronological order. Other notebooks containing Della
Corte's original research, often focusing on specific topics, follow.
Della Corte's lucidi and cards documenting inscriptions and graffiti at Pompeii and other
Campanian sites form the second large category of original research material. Each
lucido was placed inside a small envelope with identifying information. Some appear to
be true tracings or rubbings, while others appear to be drawings on vellum. This
documentation falls into several groups. The first group comprises a set of lucidi and
cards numbered from 1 to 787 and dated from 1903 to 1910. The series is incomplete,
becoming less complete as it progresses. The lucidi vary greatly in scale, and many are
oversize. The lucidi are arranged in numerical order and grouped chonologically, with
individual oversize examples following each standard-sized group. Following this
numbered series are other smaller groups of lucidi defined by date or location.
Della Corte's general research materials and notes follow the lucidi. These include
general notes, reading notes, translations and lists of material, as well as photographs
and drawings. Very little of this material is dated and much is difficult to identify
precisely.
Box 45-53 Field notes, 1905-1959
Vander Poel commissioned the addition of a brief summary of the contents to many items
in this subseries, as well as typescript copies, photocopies and notes on selected items.
