Scope and Content Note
This subseries contains a variety of material collected by Vander Poel dealing generally
with the art and archaeology of Italy, but not specifically with the area of Campania. Of
particular interest is the material relating to Vander Poel's participation in the
excavations at Gravina in Apulia and a collection of early maps of Italy.

In the spring of 1967, Vander Poel and M. A. Cotton conducted a short excavation as
part of the larger British and American excavations at Botromagno near Gravina. They
excavated a field containing a necropolis that had been the scene of tomb-robbing.
Their mission was to get data on the cemetery and determine its relation to the
residential area that lay to the north. See also Box 587.
