This subseries contains a variety of material collected by <strong>Vander</strong> <strong>Poel</strong> dealing generally<br />

with the art and archaeology of Italy, but not specifically with the area of Campania. Of<br />

particular interest is the material relating to <strong>Vander</strong> <strong>Poel</strong>'s participation in the<br />

excavations at Gravina in Apulia and a <strong>collection</strong> of early maps of Italy.<br />

In the spring of 1967, <strong>Vander</strong> <strong>Poel</strong> and M. A. Cotton conducted a short excavation as<br />

part of the larger British and American excavations at Botromagno near Gravina. They<br />

excavated a field containing a necropolis that had been the scene of tomb-robbing.<br />

Their mission was to get data on the cemetery and determine its relation to the<br />

residential area that lay to the north. See also Box 587.<br />
