Series V.B. Early documentation of Pompeii by Edward Falkener, 1846-1851, undated
Physical Description: 2.1 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
Edward Falkener (1814-1896) was an English architect with an interest in antiquity. In the
course of a Grand Tour, Falkener spent an extended period in Pompeii in the years
1846-1847 studying and sketching the ruins. He even supervised excavations in the
house of Marcus Lucretius (IX 3, 5). In 1974, Vander Poel located Falkener's papers in the
possession of his heirs in Guernsey and in 1976 arranged to have photographic copies
made of his drawings.
This subseries consists of reproductions of those materials, as well as other sources.
Falkener's drawings and sketches dating to 1846 include plans of houses, mosaics,
architectural elements, objects and reconstructions. Vander Poel also planned to publish
Falkener's "Dulcis Pompeia," an unpublished manuscript dating to 1851. The date of
Vander Poel's work on the manuscript is unknown.
